When barely of age he started his medical career by taking a course in medicine at the Long Island College hospital in New York. Following his graduation he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Garit [Garriett].  He started practicing in Tampico in 1871 and resided there until he moved to Sterling in the early part of May, 1895.

His wife died about eight years ago. He was married again to Mrs. Georgia Higley. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. Remington who resides at home; Mrs. J. J. Ludens, of Sterling; Mrs. Greenman of Tampico, and Mrs. Stanley Johnson of Iowa, and one son, Dr. Ford Smith, of this city.

Not in Sterling alone, but all over this part of the county the death of Dr. Smith will be mourned by many friends who have held him in high esteem for years. Before coming to this city he practiced for 24 years at Tampico, and he was known all over the countryside almost as well as he was known in this city. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a man of high character and many qualities of mind and temperament that endeared him to his associates. The community has suffered a great loss in the death of this able and well-beloved doctor.
