LEONARD  H.  BURROUGHS

Pneumonia Fatal to L. H. Burroughs

Prophetstown, Ill., Mar. 20 -- After only about a week of sickness Leonard H. Burroughs died of pneumonia.  Mr. Burroughs was one of the old settlers of Prophetstown township.  He was born June 2, 1851 in Ellington, New York, where he spent his early childhood and later came to Illinois, settling a Leon, living there a few years.

On February 10, 1879, he was married to Miss Malthea Shawl of Newton, Iowa.  They resided at Leon until they came to Prophetstown some 19 years ago.  His widow is very low, being confined to her bed and under the doctor's care.

Beside the widow, Mr. Burroughs is survived by an adopted son, Jesse of Trenton, Missouri.  He is also survived by one brother, Lot Burroughs who is a resident of Iowa.  The latter lived at Leon a great many years and after leaving there went to Iowa to make his home.

The funeral of Mr. Burroughs will be held Wednesday, first at the home in Prophetstown at two o'clock. Rev. J. Thompson officiating. The remains will be taken to Leon where Rev. Mr. Winter of Leon M.E. Church will hold a short service. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery.
