FLOYD A. TOPPERT, 80, of Rock Falls, IL, formerly of Prophetstown, IL, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at his home in Rock Falls, surrounded by his family.

Floyd was born September 9, 1933, in Harmon, IL, to Ernest and Darlene (Bain) Toppert. He graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1953 to 1955. He attended refrigeration school while in the service. He married Rita Jean Wirth on June 15, 1957, in Prophetstown, IL. Floyd was employed by General Electric in Morrison, IL, then went to work as a supervisor at John Deere in East Moline, IL, in 1955. He worked at John Deere until retiring in 1985. Floyd moved to the family farm in 1963 and farmed until 1983, when he suffered a severe stroke and had to leave John Deere. He worked at Self Help Enterprises in Sterling, IL, for over 15 years, until his illness with cancer. Floyd was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tampico, IL. He was a member of Prophetstown American Legion Post #522 and a member of Tampico Lions Club, where he served as treasurer for 23 years. His greatest joy was watching his sons play baseball, basketball, football, fast pitch softball, and run track. He then loved to watch his grandchildren play baseball, softball, volleyball, and track. He coached Babe Ruth and Legion baseball for several years. Floyd was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife, Rita; two sons, Bryan (Cruzita) Toppert of Rock Falls, IL and David (Lori) Toppert of Tampico, IL; three grandchildren, Olivia-Hope Toppert, Andrew and Rebecca Toppert; one sister, Geraldine Richardson of Bridgeton, MO; his mother-in-law, Genevieve Wirth; and a sister-in-law, Rhonda Stahl.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George Toppert and Burdette Toppert.

Funeral Information

FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:00 AM – Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church – Tampico, IL

OFFICIATING: Monsignor Thomas Dzielak – St. Mary’s Catholic Church – Tampico, IL

VISITATION: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM – Monday, May 26, 2014 at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home, 320 Lafayette Street, Prophetstown, IL with The Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M.

INTERMENT: Riverside Cemetery – Prophetstown, IL
