ERIE – Richard L. “Dick” Shearer, 89, of Erie, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at Unity Point Health – Trinity in Rock Island. He worked for Whiteside County Farm Service for 20 years before his retirement.

He was born May 16, 1926, in Prophetstown, the son of Louis and Louise (Hefke) Shearer. He served in the Navy on a destroyer during World War II. Dick married Jean Skarin on Sept. 7, 1947, in Prophetstown. He was a member of Countryside Christian Church in Port Byron.

Survivors include his wife; four children, David (Debra) Shearer of Geneseo, Wendy Drott of Lakewood, Colorado, Joe (Kathy) Shearer of Sterling, and Ruth (Richard) Waterman of Gastonia, North Carolina; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Jane Reynolds, and a grandson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home in Erie. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Countryside Christian Church in Port Byron. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.

A memorial has been established to Moody Bible Institute.
