Eleanor McCabe, 101, of Chicago, formerly of Tampico, IL, Wilmette, IL and La Jolla, CA, daughter of the late William and Emma Burden McCabe; sister of the late William, Harold and George McCabe; aunt of Mary Jane Crowe, Ann Connors, Ellen Rowe, Beth Bird, Beverly Jean Turner, Robert Dean McCabe, Patricia Clark, Donna Joan Loser, Ronald Neal McCabe, James Kirk McCabe and the late Guinevere Ames, Marilyn Milhollan, William Hellier McCabe and Bruce Thomas McCabe. Also survived by many grandnieces and nephews. Dearest cousin of the late William B. Graham. Visitation Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette, IL. Funeral Mass Saturday, 12 noon, at St. Mary Church, Tampico, IL. Visitation 11:30 a.m. until time of Mass at St. Mary. Interment St. Mary Cemetery, Tampico. Funeral info, Wm. H. Eleanor McCabe

CHICAGO - Eleanor McCabe, 101, of Chicago, formerly of the area, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at her home. She was a fourth-grade teacher in the Chicago public schools, including the girl's school at Latin School, and Joseph Sears School, Kenilworth, retiring in 1972.

Eleanor was born Sept. 26, 1906, the daughter of William and Emma (Burden) McCabe, and raised on her family's farm outside Tampico. She was a 1925 graduate of Tampico High School. Following high school, she trained to become a teacher and taught kindergarten through eighth-grade at Burden School, a one-room schoolhouse near Tampico, for 13 years. In 1944, she moved to Chicago, where she attended DePaul University and received a bachelor's degree and teacher certification. She lived in an apartment in Plaza del Lago, was a parishioner at St. Francis Xavier and a member of Catholic Women's Club.

Following her retirement from teaching, Eleanor moved to La Jolla, Calif., where she lived until 2000, before returning to Chicago. Throughout her life, she loved to travel and collect art.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Mary Jane Crowe, Ann Connors, Ellen Rowe, Beth Bird, Beverly Jean Turner, Robert Dean McCabe, Patricia Clark, Donna Joan Loser, Ronald Neal McCabe, James Kirk McCabe; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Harold and George McCabe; two nieces, Guinevere Ames and Marilyn Milhollan; two nephews, William Hellier McCabe and Bruce Thomas McCabe; and dear cousin, William B. Graham.

Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette.

Local services include funeral Mass at noon Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tampico, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico. Visitation is from 11:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tampico.

Mary Eleanor McCabe, Born: 1906

Eleanor graduated from Tampico High School, Tampico, Illiois, and then attended St. Xavier College in Chicago, Illiois, while living with her aunt, Elizabeth Graham. She started teaching at the Burden Grade School in Tampico, Illinois, continuing for seventeen years. In June of 1943, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she did substitute teaching and went to DePaul University at night and Saturdays, receiving  a Bachelor of Science and EducationDegree. In September of 1944, she taught at the Latig Grace School in Chicago, Illinois, where she stayed for 14 years after which she taught 13 uears at Joseph Sears Grade School in Kenilworth, Illinois. Eleanor retired in June of 1973 and moved to La Jolla, California the following year.  (Exerpt from a Family History compiled by Genevieve Mary McCabe Ladwig, 1992).
