Tampico Tornado - July 14, 1883

~ A twenty dollar cigar seems to be a little extravagant for a person to be seen smoking in this village, yet such a fact really did occur here last week. Some ten days since a bet --no, agreement was entered into by one E. A. LaDue and one L. L. Griffin to stop smoking and the first one to smoke was to pay the other twenty dollars. For a day or so all went well, and about all Ed talked of was that he had quit smoking and he found it an easy matter to do; but in a day or so he could be seen with an unlighted cigar in his mouth; finally a match found its way to the other end of the cigar and a twenty dollar cigar was soon reduced to ashes. Ed says he is going to pay that bet when he threshes his cats.
