Where would a person find the record of people buried in the cemetery that is near the Loraine Church? Does the church have this, or the county?

Where is this cemetery? County? Town?

The address of this church is 28782 E St Prophetstown, but it has a Geneseo phone number, and is in Henry county. If you would follow the Springhill blacktop toward rt. 92, you will pass the church before you reach 92.

Mrs. Francis Smith of Loraine Twp would have the info on the cemetery. She does the history for the Loraine Church. Her number is 309-944-5236

Good Luck!

I don't think Kemmis Cemetery has ever been anything but Kemmis. Lots of them buried there. Is there someone special you are looking for?

On the back of the banner sign there it says Union Cemetery, and the est. date. That's what I was going by.

You have the correct address for the Loraine Church but you may have it confused with the Sharon Church and Cemetery about 2 1/2 miles west of Springhill on Springhill Rd. which is still Whiteside County. The Loraine Church is located about 4 miles south of Springhill. You go south 2 miles of Springhill on Banks Rd., turn right on Osage Rd. (county line rd.) go west about a 1/4 mile, turn left on 2000 East Rd., and the church is about 1 3/4 miles south. The Cemetery is located about 1/2 mile north of the church and up a farm lane to the East. It can be seen from the road and is in very good condition and you can drive right to it. You can also get there from Rt. 92 by turning North on 2000 East Rd. and the church is 1 mile north and another 1/2 mile to the cemetery.

I think you may be right! I drove to Kemmis Cemetery last night and it does not have a banner with Union Cemetery over it. Just a brick pillar with Kemmis Cemetery plaque on it.

No....I do know the difference. The Kemmis cemetery says Kemmis as you pull into the drive, and it is directly across the street from a house that was probably a school at one time. I recognized some of the newer burials there as the Kemmis family (Garland and Edna Jackson) are some of the newer plots.
There is a sign high off the ground, which I thought of as a banner, and on the BACK of that sign, it read Union Cemetery est. 1862. Don't know why I looked at the back of the sign, but I did, and had a pencil and pad with me, so I wrote it down. Next time I am there, I will be sure to bring my camera, and take a picture of what I saw.
Now if I could find more info on the Loraine cemetery, I'd be happy. I heard it had been moved at one time, and shared space with another church also. I am following up on that. My 3 grandfather was buried there, as per the Geneseo Republic paper says (1902), yet he is not on the
list of the present Loraine cemetery. I'm wondering if he is in a small overgrown plot somewhere near the church. Old plat books are showing some old ones around there, I just have to find somebody who knows this.

Here is a link to our Misc. Cemeteries, which includes Kemmis. I have taken a photo of the front and back of the Entrance sign. It reads as follows: Union Cemetery - Loraine Centre, Est. June 1862 - Cornelius H Kemmis - Tree & Sign - Memorial for _raig K Jac_son - Family & Friends. (the underscores are where letter is missing). Hope this is helpful.Click on photo to open "album" - you can click on individual photo to enlarge it, read details and also to leave a comment (don't forget to hit "save" if you leave a comment) In the top left corner of album, you can click on "view album" to see all of the cemetery photos in this album. Currently it includes Loraine, Sharon & Kemmis Cemetery . I will be adding to it as time allows.

Well I am glad I didn't dream reading those words Union Cemetery! I just thought I looked up at a long sign, guess it was just the back of the fence.
Anyway, it does say Loraine on there too...hmmm. Wonder if what I heard about moving the Loraine cemetery was true? I talked with a lady today that found a record of my relatives owning two lots at the Loraine cemetery...but they had other people in them! They decided not to use them, I guess.
But the Geneseo paper says he was buried there. Guess I will have to look at the Kemmis list now to see if he is there after all, and I just couldn't read it.

Bette,
I don't know if you clicked on the photo above to open the entire photo album - That "fence" IS the sign. On the other side of that "fence" sign is the Kemmis Cemetery name. Just click on the photo > in upper left corner it will say "view album" If you click on that, it will show you pictures of Kemmis Cem., Sharon Cemetery & Loraine Cemetery. You can then click on idividual photo from the album to enlarge photo, read details and leave a comment if you want.

Denise,
Yes, that is what I meant. I remember looking at the back of a long type sign...I just thought I was looking up at it instead of just a regular height fence. I don't know what made me read it at all..

Now when I go back to the library, I'll take a good look at the names of the people buried there. There were quite a few I couldn't read. Some were slabs tilted so far forward, you could see the fronts at all.
I wonder if there is a way of reading under them. A big mirror maybe??

Diane: Is their information available on Sharon Church? As you may remember, I found my great great grandfather Williams Maynard and great greatmother Prudence Maynard in the cemetary next to the church.
Any info would be appreciated.

"It reads as follows: Union Cemetery - Loraine Centre, Est. June 1862 - Cornelius H Kemmis - Tree & Sign - Memorial for _raig K Jac_son - Family & Friends."

This was a memorial for Craig K Jackson by his family, father was Kem Jackson, I'm not sure but I think his mom was Judy Jackson.

I asked my ex husband who lives on the dead end road just west of Weber Beef road (Bos Machine road), he doesn't think he's ever seen an abandoned cemetery there.

This is really getting exciting, I can't wait for a road cruise!

Hi Bill,
Yes, I remember that you found some relatives out at the Sharon Cemetery. STerling Library has a listing for that cemetery, I believe. I even copied it at one time, but cannot find it for the life of me. If you contact Marilyn Anderson, head of the Genealogy Dept., she could do a look-up for you. All of the Sterling Library contact info can be found on our TABLE OF CONTENTS > WHITESIDE COUNTY > Whiteside County Contacts.

I can do it, but not sure when I will get over there. Do you have specific names you are looking for? Or what info are you looking for specifically? I haven't checked Chris Walter's site over on Genealogy Trails/Whiteside - have you?If so, let me know and IF I can get over there, I'll check for you.

I clicked over to Genealogy Trails/Whiteside. There is a little blurb on the beginnings of the Sharon Church: http://genealogytrails.com/ill/whiteside/portland.html
Also, in her Cemetery section, she has a partial listing for Sharon Cemetery.

I have learned so much about cemeteries on this website, and so interesting too!

Now if I could just find my 3gr.grandparents who died in Loraine! They do not appear on any lists yet.
And old plat book of 1910 of Loraine Twp shows a small cemetery near Loraine, but on the north side of 92 from Webers, and about a mile in from the highway. My cousin remembers seeing it along the road, but I will be lucky to have them in that, with a readable stone.
But it does keep up the interest..

Thank you Bette - I am always thrilled to hear if folks have enjoyed their visit to our site. I am hoping that maybe "Katminder" may be of more help to you.

Have you tried the "Find-A-Grave"? I am so busy exploring in our Tornado newspapers and other documents at the historical society, that I don't get to peruse the I-net for other resources as much I probalby should. I hope if others have suggestions for other sites, they will post them. Goal is to get the information to the folks needing it. For "free" sites, the LDS-FHL and Rootsweb are still your best bet, I think.

Posting on local message boards is the best, because you have "direct" contact with people familiar with the area. I just love the people that contribute on our site. I learn something new every day!

I am a decendant of John Kimmis and Mary Darragh. I have been researching this family for five years and have received some responses from "cousins". I have family buried in the Kemmis Cemetery and would love any information anyone may have on them and thier families.
They had three children, Samuel, Willaim and Agnes. I am down the Samuel line and C.H. Kemmis is down the William line.

I currently live in Hawaii, so it is impossible for me to get to the cemetery myself. If someone can help me it would be great.

Thanks Karen

Aloha Karen!
How exciting to hear from you. Did you want photos of the headstones? Obits? There are a few of us on this board that may be able to help in that respect.

Pictures and Obits would be great. I have a few but I am sure there are many more than what I have.

As you stated in one of your previous postings, the building across from the cemetery did used to be the Kemmis School from what some of my other relatives have told me.

To Karen Kemmis: if you'd like to email me privately I'll send you a link to John Kemmis's homepage. He lived close to the cemetery and school most of his life. His cousin, Sid Kemmis lives on the family farm 1/4 mile from both.

I'm also a descendant of John Kimmis, but down the William line.

John->William->Samuel->Thompson->Walter->Frank->Richard->Me

I won't ask for help now. I've only been researching a short while and wouldn't know what to ask. I just thought I'd add my name to the Kemmis clan for any that follow after me.

Take care,
Melody

Melody,
I just thought of a way I may be able to help you out. I have a homepage on genealogy.com here is the address:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/e/m/Karen-Leigh-Kemmismorse-SALINA/index.html#edit

It has, at the bottom, my family, one starting with John Kimmis and Mary Darragh and the other back to the 1100's (from the family in Wales to John Kimmis's father and others after that in the family).

All the names I have are on this page. Hope this helps.

I just found your site today (12/27/2008). Hello!! I have tidbits of info that may be helpful to each of you. First of all, Loraine Church is located 1/2 mile north of Illinois Route 92 and 10 miles east of Joslin, Illinois; take I-88 east to Joslin exit; turn right, and continue driving east for about 10 minutes. You will go past a sign for "Geneseo." You can see the Loraine Church steeple from Illinois Route 92 East (it will be off on your left).
Our family cemetery (Kemmis Cemetery) is about 2-3 miles east of the turnoff for Loraine Church; just continue east on Illinois Route 92. The Kemmis Cemetery is off on your right, before the intersection for "Atkinson." Lenora,Mabel, Lyle and Aro Kemmis went to the one-room Kemmis School, directly across from the Kemmis Cemetery; they were the children of Lyman and Wilma (Wildman) Kemmis; Sid and Carlene Kemmis live at the family farm located directly north of Kemmis Cemetery, north of Illinois Route 92 East. The late Lyle and Marilyn Kemmis were the parents of Sid Kemmis and Lyn Teerlinck; the late Arlo and Joyce Kemmis were the parents of Tim Kemmis and John Kemmis; the late Lester and surviving Mabel (Kemmis) Buysse are the parents of James Buysse, Joseph Buysse, and Barbara Buysse; the late Henry and surviving Lenora (Kemmis) Pritchard are the parents of the late Donna Lee and myself.
I am the mother of Jay Falk and Heather (Falk) Alamo; I have a new granddaughter Leah Falk, born in October 2008, and step-granddaughter Camryn Hoskins, to join grandson Logan (three years old) and granddaughter Sienna (six months old) in Australia.
I am a retired RN, and live comfortably in Iowa City, Iowa. I am celebrating my 34th anniversary (of my divorce) in 2009; have not remarried.
Kem and the late Judy Jackson are the parents several children, including the late Craig Jackson; Kem has a surviving sister Lola Kay; their late mother is Edna Jackson, the daughter of Quincy and Hattie Kemmis, my grandpa's brother.
There is a family history book that relates us to Princess Diana, as well as U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. I have been to the Adams birthplace in Quincy, Massachusetts, (several times with my children), a fantastic homestead to visit!!
Hope this helps,
JeanmarieF
