Hello everyone. I am just starting on my Baumgart/dner line and it brought me to Bureau County.

Christiand and Julie (Berthoud) Baumgartner came to Ohio from Switzerland around 1849-1851 (still looking for passenger list). Their oldest son was John who was born in 1834 in Switzerland.

He came to Bureau County by 1860 (supposedly he married first in 1858 in Bureau but can't find him in the 1860 censu).

His first wife, Mary Berg, died in 1882 and in 1883 he remarried Margaret "Maggie" Guither. They had two sons, Edward and Samuel.

Edward married Pauline ??. She died in 1925 and Edward died in Mar 1970 in Walnut.

Samuel mrd Marguerite ?? . He died in Jun 1982. Unsure about his wife.

John's second wife and mother of the two boys died on 30 Aug 1935 in Walnut.

JOhn supposedly died in 1900. He was in the 1900 census so it had to be after that.

I am looking for obits, marriage dates, cemetery info (which if I could find obits would most likely give me cemetery/burial info), etc.

I thought I would be able to get the marriage info on John on IRAD but see that they don't hold the marriage index for Bureau County...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Juls

Hello Juls,
Glad your genealogical journey has pointed you in our direction ~ Welcome!
A couple of resources that you may or may not be aware of:
The on-line indexes of Death/Marriages in IL. I picked a few listed on their site, but do not know if they are yours. There are instructions for obtaining certificates if it is of interest to you -

llinois Statewide Death Index, 1916–1950
http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html

(after looking on the census records, I see this is not your Christian.)
Another awesome resource is the Sterling Gazette newspaper index on line. Even though this is published in Whiteside county, the news of bordering counties find their way in the paper.

There were 5 pages of entries for this surname!
Here are a few examples:
Sterling Gazette: Baumgartner Family 15th reunion 18 Sep 1990;B7;3-4
Sterling Gazette: Baumgartner, Sam Mr. & Mrs. anniversary - 50 9 Dec 1971;14;1 Baumgartner, S.F. celebrates wedding anniversary--25th 10 Dec 1946;8;6
Sterling Gazette: Baumgartner, Samuel F. (Dessie Wolf) obituary 11 Jan 1982;A4;2 (looking at the 1930 census records, this appears to be YOUR Samuel)

Contact information for the Sterling Library, including the on-line index for the Gazette can be found on our TABLE OF CONTENTS page > WHITESIDE COUNTY - "Who to contact for birth/death/marriage/naturalization records in Whiteside County. Includes email addresses"
http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Whiteside_Co_Contacts.html

Also check with the BCGS (Bureau County Genealogical Society). They have indexed all of their newspapers, which they have microfilmed on site. Their information and contact lists can also be found on our TABLE OF CONTENTS > BUREAU COUNTY. There are two links -
BUREAU COUNTY CONTACTS - one goes directly to their website and the other lists the contacts for them Bureau Co. Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilbcgs/
That is your best source for obits/marriages, etc. within Bureau County.

I try to make a trip to the Sterling library weekly, and may be able to do lookups for you.

Let me know if there is something specific you would like me to transcribe from the Gazette.

The following pedigree is listed on Family Search.org, and was submitted by someone in Dixon. Have you two connected?

Thanks Denise for all the wonderful help...

I am going to see what I can do with those death records you found... The Julia's wouldn't work but the Christian has me curious...

I am a little bnmmed that IRAD doesn't have Bureau County marriages... Do you know why? I have a few marriages that supposedly happened there but can't get confirmation on them... Dang it! LOL

I am going to look at the Bureau County site... I just did the Whiteside one and I would like all that you mentioned transcribed along with one more... The obituary for Dessie Wolf Baumgartner... It was 24 Feb 1983; A4,2...

I haven't corresponded with Robert Boward and I couldn't find the info on familysearch.org but will write him a letter... Couldn't hurt!

Thanks for all your help... This site is great!!

I'll head over to Sterling today.
On Familysearch.org (the LDS-FHL) do the following:
familysearch.org
SEARCH:
Type in:
Christian Baumgartner
(add spouse surname): Berthoud
Leave rest blank.
It should yield the following:

Ancestral File
1. Christian BAUMGARTNER - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: 26 May 1799 Bremergarten Parish, Berne, Switzerland

Follow the links through the pedigree & family. Too much info for me to post on site here. The submitter was:
ROBERT BOWARD Microfilm:

USA Submission: AF95-111262

You can then download his GEDCOM if you like.

(excerpt – Tales from Tampico)
TAMPICO - The 15th annual BAUMGARNER (sic) family reunion was held on Sept. 9 at the Wesley Hall of the United Methodist Church in Ohio, Ill. Paul ALBRECHT gave grace before the potluck dinner.

A short business meeting was held after dinner with president Alvin BIRKEY presiding. Marriages during the year were Paul ALBRECHT and Jean LITTLEWOOD on Dec. 30, 1989; Joe BIRKEY and LouAnn HOPPER on May 5, 1990l and Brenda ALBRECHT and Jerry SOWCICKI on August 5, 1990.

A letter was read from Mrs. Sina E. BAUMGARTNER from Hall of Nevada, Iowa. She said her brother Lyle BAUMGARTNER passed away on Jan. 7, 1990, and this leaves her as the only living member of the Allen BAUMGARTNER family. A letter was also received on an update on the HALL family. Fredric D. HALL’s son James was married on June 10, 1989 to Sue WHITMAN.

Two guests were present – Lee YAUDUS of Battle Creek, Mich. And Gerry POMERY of Alaska. There were 34 members who attended. Helen HOGE took pictures of the family groups who attended.

Since the above still leaves a lot of your questions unanswered, I would recommend you contact the Bureau County Genealogical Society (info can be found on our TABLE OF CONTENTS page) http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilbcgs/ in Princeton for obits for John and his wives. I can check the Walnut library for the cemetery lists to see if they are buried there, but I can't get out to Princeton with the nast weather.

They are: Linda, born 1947, married Darrel LAURITZEN, has two children, Amber and Brian, lives in Henry, IL; Kevin, born 1948, lives in the Ohio area; and Brenda, born 1951, married David WATERHOUSE, has one son, Chad, lives in Ohio, IL.

This makes the 7th direct generation living in the Ohio area. The farm home was buildt in 1870. It was enlarged and remodeled as the family grew. The kitchen end of the house is the original building. The original beams were revealed when the roomwas repaneled.

We went to the cemetery to see if we could find Christian and Julia, but the stones were too covered in snow. Will have to wait for awhile. My guess is that Christian & Julia are either in the Red Oak or the Walnut Cemeteries. Neither cemetery list is complete, so will have to hoof it through the cemetery. I did see quite a few of the Baumgartners, Albrechts and the other surnames they married into at the Red Oak, just driving through.

Jacob Albrech (1805-1878) was founder of Village of Ohio.
Anna BAUMBGARTNER (1866-1945) married Fred A. Albrecht (1859-1936), youngest child of Jacob Albrecht.(click on photo to enlarge & read details)

Jacob Albrecht (1805-1878) was founder of theVillage of Ohio, Bureau County, IL. His youngest son, Fred A. (1859-1936) married Anna Baumgartner (1866-1945).

Fred A. Albrecht, the youngest son of Jacob Albrecht, was born northwest of Princeton. He received 160 acres from his father in section 5 of Ohio Township, and his home was in the house presently occupied by Howard Anderson. He married Anna Baumgartner and they had seven children: Henry C. born 1886; George (1887-1967); Albert D., born 1889; Amelia, born 1891; Sadie, (1893-1960); Pearle (1902-1970); and Florence, born 1903.

Fred A. Albrecht is best remembered for beginning a well drilling business which has groown and has been continued for three more generations. He built a series of three ponds on his farm which at one time furnished the ice supply for Ohio.

Anna Baumgartner was the daughter of Henry Christian & Anna (Pope)Baumgartner and the granddaughter of Christian and Julie (Berthoud) Baumgartner.

Oh wow... this is awesome... You so rock!!!

Christian is buried in Stone Creek, Tuscarawas County... From a little tidbit of info I got previously Julie is supposedly buried at Red Oak in her son's, John, lot...

She was supposed to have had a stone with just the word "Grandma" on it but it was replaced in the 70's to her name with full dates on it...

This info helps so much...

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

I took what you gave me and googled his name... Found another obit that was on the funeral home in Keytesville, MO... Just posting here... not sure how to post in obit section... This one gave his mother's maiden name... WOOT!!

HENRY ROGER BAUMGARTNER, better known as Roger Baumgartner (and got aggravated if you called him Henry) died March 7, 2008 at his home. Roger was born October 28, 1935 in Walnut, Illinois the son of Walter and Dorothy (Plapp) Baumgartner.

He is survived by two sisters Ilene Sperling from Fisher, Ill and Lois Dremann from Ohio, Ill; one daughter Lori Baumgartner from Garrett, Indiana; one son Daniel Baumgartner from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; step-son Larry Box of Keytesville; three granddaughters Alicia from Ill, Amanda from Ill, and Karilyn from New York, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, a good friend Deborah Kucharski.

Roger retired from farming in Illinois and moved to rural Keytesville in 1998. It was there he started a small rental property business that he maintained until his death. Roger was a quiet person. His lack of hearing made it hard for him to socialize, most everyone that knew him liked him, but didn’t know much about him. He collected antique tractors and published and edited an antique tractor magazine “The Prairie Gold Rush” for ten years. Roger had many friends from all over the United States with the same passion of antique tractors.

Visitation was Sunday, March 9th from 3-5:00 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 5:00 p.m. at the Summerville Funeral Home in Salisbury. Services are 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 10th at the Summerville Funeral Home with burial in Asbury Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard County Hospice.
