All,
I am looking for an obit on William Foy.

He was b 1791 in Vt, m. Ruth Morrill in 1811, d. 1869. William Foy lived in the P-Town and Tampico area from about 1848 till 1869 and is buried in Leon Cemetery. He is also the father of David and George Foy who also lived in the area. What I show is he died in Prairie City, McDonough County, Il. Not sure if any newspapers are still around from that time frame, but would appreciate if someone could let me know if they do. THANKS!!

Regarding William's birth date, reference "Portrait & Bio. Album of WS Co. 1885" for George Foy it states "... William Foy, was a native of Vermont and was born about 1788." Based on the headstone found in Leon Cemetery, Illinois for William Foy, the actual date of his birth was 1791. This Biography was written 16 years after William Foy's death so the source of the information in 1885 may not have had accurate records.

Hi Brian,
I got your email, but decided for now to respond on the message board so that hopefully, Denise will read this and see what she knows about the newspapers.
The Prophetstown Echo or Spike as it was called in early days began publication in the early 1870's, so I don't think that would be of help on william and Ruth. It looks as though they both died before our towm began publishing a newspaper, and our older papers are not available to the public to search as they are very fragile. Our library has papers on microfilm beginning in about 1915 to the present. Denise, do you know about the Sterling Gazette? When did they begin publishing a newspaper?
We have old Echo's at the Prophetstown Historical Museum, but not very many in the 1800's.
Also, I have checked in the past with our funeral director about their records. They begin in the early 1900's and he has no idea where the records went from the two funeral homes that were in town before he was here.
This really doesn't answer your question or give you any help, but it tells you what we have available here in Prophetstown.
Denise, do you know what the IL Newspaper preservation project has? I know that we recently received word from the University of Illinois that they are working on preserving old newspapers too. Do you know what they have?

Brian,
Why don't you contact Marilyn Anderson at the email address below (Sterling Library)? She can email you the obit - She only charges a dollar for the copy. Be sure and tell her we sent you!

Sterling Gazette began publishing in 1854. The Sterling library has them on microfilm. They have many of them indexed on line. Currently they are working on 1890s, so it will be a while before the earlier ones are indexed. However, if you are in the area, you can certainly view them at the library.

They are also offered on "inter-library loan" which is what Melva Taylor uses to transcribe for us and she lives in MI.

The website for the IL Newspapers is:
http://www.illinoishistory.gov/lib/newspaper.htm
There is a search box for you to select the town. The rest is pretty self-explanatory. More info on the Newspapers & Microfilm can be found on same site: http://www.illinoishistory.gov/lib/Microfilm.htm

Details on the IL NEWSPAPER PROJECT can be found here:
