Victor finds fulfillment coaching girls team

Richard Victor has spent most of his 28 coaching seasons working with males, not females. But the hard-nosed, hustling brand of basketball he demands has worked as well with the Freedom High girls as it ever did with all of those boys high school and college men's teams he cracked the whip for over the years in Illinois, Texas and Michigan.

The Patriots (24-6), only five years after the school's doors opened, will play in a Class 6A state semifinal game tonight at 8:30 against Hialeah (23-3).

"You're coaching basketball to student-athletes, regardless of gender," Victor said Wednesday. "It's really no different."

And like his best boys teams, the Patriots have taken on the persona of their coach.

"I'm an old-school coach, and these kids do things a lot of teams don't like to do," Victor said. "They don't just bend over for a loose ball; they dive for it. I have great kids and a great staff, and when you've done it for as long as I have, those two things are what really brings out the fun."

Victor, 50, has a 414-250 record as a head coach. That includes stints as a college coach at Glen Oaks Community College of Michigan (1990-95) and Davenport University of Michigan (2002-05).

His only previous stint coaching girls was early in his career at Tampico, Ill., where he went 56-32 over three seasons.

Victory was an associate head coach for the Freedom boys last season. When the girls job opened, he was encouraged to consider a program that was ready for a breakthrough.

The Patriots have nine seniors but start three juniors, including leading scorers Mel Itajahy and Amanda Schultz.

"There's something to say for gray hair on the bench," said Roy Peters, Freedom's athletic director. "I thought he could do a great job, and he really has."
