Hello,

I live in Victoria, BC Canada and am a keen genealogist. My husband
recently acquired the attached photo when someone at the local
auction removed it from the back of a piece of artwork. It had been
used as a backer board and was going to be thrown away.

It clearly shows the name of a photographer and is marked "Tampico,
Ill." I am sure there is a family somewhere that would love a copy of
this photo. The presence of buggies to the left would indicate an
early date as would the clothing.

Perhaps you can indentify the house or people in the photo. I can
send a better quality image if necessary but am sending a low quality
one to save bandwidth.
Helen Edwards
Victoria, BC

Note: It was taken by Lamon Photography who was here in early 1900's.

Ta-Dah! I found the photo, along with the names in photo on Chris Walter's Genealogy Trails/Whiteside site: She has given her permission to reprint the names here, but I would also like to link back to her site as she has a wonderful biography on the family and a nice diagram that better explains the people in the picure. Here are the names:

Great! I have emailed the lady that sent the photo via email and asked for a higher resolution photo be sent or to snail mail me a copy. I hope we find some of the descendants from these families.

I thought I would stop in Good Times here in town, since she was married to a Pope. She might be able to tell me where the house is located.

BIG THANKS to Chris Walters for allowing me to post the information about the photo on our site. And a big thanks to Bill Lappenbush for submitting the information to Genealogy Trails/Whiteside! http://genealogytrails.com/ill/whiteside/

Well, aren't you a doll, Les? Thanks for the added info. We have a descendant of Harlow Smith living in Tampico. His name is Duane Thompson (son of Jack & Ruth Countryman Thompson). Duane did a presentation on Harlow in one of Cemetery Walks. He was excited to see this photo, but I am still waiting for the lady to get back to me with a clearer photo.

For those with an interest, Harlow Smith's Bio is transcribed on this website from one of the Whiteside Co. Bio books. I think it was the 1885, but not positive.

Hard to imagine, but there was a time when I could tell you every single piece of data on this site by memory. Not any more! (SMILE)

Thanks again Les.

Hi everyone,

I finally got time to scan the photo and send a high quality copy to Denise. I am reading all the material you have posted about this photo as i am planning to write a short piece on the photo for our local genealogy society. At least 2 of the people in the photo, Fanny Turgoose and Emma Sadler lived in the Victoria area. That is probably how the photo got here in the first place.

I am also going to share the information with the Saanich Pioneers Society who collect the history of early settlers on the Saanich Peninsula, just north of Victoria.

Momsie/Helen,
I have not received anything in my email or snail mail yet. There was really a lot of interest in that photo! The general consensus right now is that it is a house on the corner of Lincoln & W 2nd Street, just east of the elementary school. It was Boline Olson's house, but he was a neighbor to a Pope. That porch has been enclosed and bumped out, but otherwise, it looks the same.
Denise
Click on photo to enlarge. 108 Lincoln Street, Tampico, IL Prior home of Boline Olson. Pope's lived next door.

Hi Milo,
Yes, that's what a lot of us thought, including Butch McNinch, who use to live there. However, we have all changed our mind since we have scrutinized the homes. Joan has photos of her house with that lattice structure that is visible in the 1910 photo and she also has the stained glass section of that front window. There were quite a few houses that were built by the same builder, so it resembles a few different ones. But we are pretty sure it is the old Boline Olson residence. As for the terrain, look at old photos of the "Reagan School" building or also known as the Tampico School. The school was right across the street from this house on Lincoln. It was a lot different back in 1910, which may explain the appearance of being on a "hill" in the 1910 photo.

Here is a picture of the house north of town. Click on it to open the photo album and enlarge the photo. You can then click on the magnifying icon to enlarge and pan the picture. There are two views, so simply click on the forward arrow at top of photo after you open the album.

Let me know what you think....
