GARLAND Rock Falls: - Gordon C. Garland, 73, of 1413 Shore Acres Road, died Monday at CGH Medical Center, Sterling. Private graveside services were 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Tampico with Rev. Thomas Risley, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Rock Falls, officiating. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Rock Falls. A memorial has been established. Mr. Garland was born Sept. 13, 1915 in Fulton, the son of John and Agnes Leahy Garland. He married Harriette Glassburn on Sept. 23, 1940 and she died on Sept. 1, 1968. Mr. Garland had operated Garland Oil in Tampico and was an owner/operator of a tavern in Tampico for several years. He had been a car salesman for Guthrie Ford and Myers Ford in Sterling, and prior to his retirement in 1981, he had worked for Northwestern Steel and Wire. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Georgianne) Yost of Chicago, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Murnick of Lamont, Rita Garland of Rock Falls; two grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hamblock of Tampico. He was preceded in death by one brother. 1940 - Harriette Glassburn - Gordon Garland Submitted by Melva Taylor The Tampico Tornado October 2, 1940 - Thursday YOUNG PEOPLE EXCHANGED VOWS Two Well-Known Couples Were United In Marriage The recent marriage of Miss Harriette Glassburn, youngest daughter of R. L. Glassburn, and Gordon Garland, both of Tampico which occurred at three o'clock Monday afternoon, Sept. 23, at Davenport, Iowa, has been announced. The young couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Klobes of Davenport. The bride wore a dress of navy blue sheer fashioned coat style and wore pink accessories. Mrs. Klobes' dress was of black sheer with dark accessories. Both the bride and her attendant wore shoulder bouquets of pink and white rosebuds and babysbreath. Following the ceremony the bridal party had dinner in Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Garland have a furnished apartment in the home of Mrs. Mary Glassburn, the bride's grandmother. Mr. Garland is employed in Hurd's tavern. The young people are receiving the best wishes and congratulations of their friends. The Tampico Tornado October 2, 1940 - Thursday MISCELLANEOUS SHOWER Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garland were honored at a miscellaneous shower at the Legion Hall Tuesday evening. The time was spent playing bunco with Mrs. R. L. Teach receiving the high prize and Donald Glassburn the low. The hall was decorated in pink and blue, the bride's chosen colors. Streamers of crepe paper extended from the lights to the ceiling and to the corner of one long table on which the gifts had been placed. The table was also decorated in pink and blue. A white wedding bell was suspended over the center of the room. A two-tier wedding cake beautifully decorated and topped with a minature bride and groom was placed on a small table with pink candles in pink holders on either side. This table was decorated in pink, blue and white. Garden flowers completed the decorations. The young couple received a large number of beautiful gifts and each responded with words of appreciation. At a late hour a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, cake, ice cream and coffee was served. A rosary was said at 8 p.m. Monday in the Grennan and Son Funeral Home where the prayer service was held at 9. a.m. There was a requiem mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Rock Falls. Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery at Tampico. Mrs. Garland was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Tampico, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Glassburn. She was united in marriage to Gordon Garland Sept. 23, 1940 in Tampico by the Rev. A. Weitekamp. She had spent her entire liefetime in this vicinity. She was a member of St. Andrew's Church and of the Altar and Rosary Society, Rock Falls. Surviving with the husband are three daughters at home, Georgianne, Mary Sue and Rita Rae. Mrs. Garland also leaves two sisters, Miss Vida Glassburn of Rock Falls and Miss Marianne Glassburn of DeKalb. ----------- September 4, 1968 - Wednesday, pg 6 Rites Conducted For Mrs. Gordon Garland Funeral rites for Mrs. Gordon Garland were conducted Tuesday morning. There was a 9 a.m. prayer service in the Grennan and Son Funeral Home and requiem mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The Rev. William Meyers officiated. Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico. The pallbearers were Merle Marx, LeRoy Gray, Harry Hurd, Kenneth Olson, Don Owens and Al Melville.
