Hello, I have been trying to find out information on my fathers biological family in Sterling Illinois for years. The last name was "Mitchell" Its a very odd story and I don't have alot of information. The info I do have is a little sad.
My grandfathers name was Dewey Mitchell. He was married to one lady for a certain number of years, and I think they had 3-5 children. He then left her for another woman by the name of Paula. They had 3 boys and then Paula left him for another man and had a girl with him. When Paula left him, he suppossedly moved to Sterling to live with one of his daughters, who would be my dads sister. I know his older sisters from the previous marriage would babysit him and call him "Little Dewey" The last piece of information that I have is that Dewey Mitchell committed suicide in a bar in Sterling by drinking a vile of cyanide poison and saying "Well, this is it"
If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me. My e-mail is- mama3kaiser@yahoo.com
Thank you in advance. Amanda

The Gazette Index lists the following:

Mitchell, Dewey A. funeral rites 2 Aug 1950;2;2

You can have them send you copies of the obit.

Thank you so much Denise. I have gotten that article from the library a few years ago. That is how I had the information that I do have. I was hoping that someone local might possibly no of any relation, or that it may be such a small area that "everyone knows everyone" type thing. Is Mitchell a popular name in Sterling?
I know its kind of a shot in the dark, but I have been searching for 10 years for any connection to my fathers bio-logical family.
I really appreciate your help. In the ten years that I have been searching, you are the first to answer one of my posts! Thanks again! :-)

Hi Amanda,
We'll just have to see what we can find for you! Sterling isn't really my turf, but it's close. Hopefully one of our regulars can offer some help, too. We have Mitchell's in Tampico, too, but don't know if they are related. I'll ask around and post if I find anything. Where did he live before Sterling?

Have you searched Chris Walter's site @ Genealogy Trails/Whiteside? http://genealogytrails.com/ill/whiteside/
She can't answer any questions or do research because she is not in IL, but she has a very large data base which includes Sterling.

Could you do me a favor and send me the articles from the Gazette? It might help me find something. You could either post the obit in this message thread or you can email it to me tahs@thewisp.net or ddm1050@hotmail.com

Hi Denise,
I will go through boxes and find the article. I remember it listing names of a brother and a sister, and also the name of one daughter. I spent a few days calling people in Sterling trying to find a connection, with no luck.
I have been to the Whiteside geaneology web-site, but several years ago. I will look through, it looks to have way more information than it used to.
Also, my Grand-father was in between Centrailia and Sterling at the time of his death. I have heard stories of there being a strong Cherokee connection, but I am not certain of the specifics.
Thank you so much for your help! I will get ahold of the article and scan it and post it.
Take care- Amanda

I couldn't find any articles on it in the Tampico Tornado, so anything you can send will be helpful. Thanks
Denise
