My sister and I recently had a conversation of remember when that somehow led to wondering who the janitor at Tampico High was before Bill Bostelman. When I saw the obit for Carolyn Avery it jogged my memory(I think). I'm thinking Horace Avery was the janitor prior to Bill, but I can't remember for sure. Also, can't seem to recall where the Avery's lived. Can anyone help?

Hi Milo,
I don't know where the Avery's lived - hopefully someone else can chime in. If you give me a time-frame for Bostelman, I can check the years books at TAHS.

Hi Denise, I'm not real sure, but I think Bostelman's moved to Tampico around 1951 or 1952. Horace would have been the janitor in the late 40s early 50s. There is a picture on this site of Bill Bostelman at the school in 1957. If there is anyone around town who was in high school in 1950, they might be able to help.

I checked the 1953, but he was still janitor then. The next year books we have are 1949 and 1948. Neither of them mention the janitor in it. Do you know what year Herb Kirst was janitor? I know we have that information somewhere. I'll check again.

I found a certificate for being a bus driver in 1954/55.

Who did you find as janitor in 1953? Who is the certificate of us driver for in 54/55? I wasn't aware Herb Kirst was a janitor at the high school; my earliest recollection of Herb was driving a milk truck for Chapin's. Didn't mean to send you on a wild goose chase, but Horace just popped into my head when we were talking about the janitor. Thanks a bunch for all your hard work.

OK - Herb Kirst was the janitor for the grade school.
Horace Avery can be traced back to at least1945 (Ethel Rosene remembers him as the janitor when she was there in that year)
1955 - Horace Avery was (head) Custodian & William Bostleman was Assistant Custodian
1957- Bill Bostleman is head custodian.
Tah-Dah! (smile)

Thanks Denise! Boy, when you brought Herb into it I really thought my memory was bad.

Hi Milo,
Yah, it created quite a discussion at the monthly meeting, too. It was funny listening to everyone and how differently we "remember" things. At first, NO ONE remembered Herb as a bus driver until I said I had a certificate on display upstairs (usually no one goes upstairs except me!) to him regarding his years as a bus driver. Finally, Marge Wetzell (Harold's wife), said he was the janitor at the elementary school. I think they just took my word for it that he was a bus driver as well. I'll try to post the certificate to the site. This was a fun little challenge - thank you!

And now....for some humble pie - It was Glenn LeRoy Kirst that was the bus driver! The certificate was clipped to an item of Herb Kirst (my fault)

I remember Avery and to the best of my memory he was the janitor for all the four years I attended - from 1035 tp 1038.

A further note on Horace Avery. If I remember correctly, and my memory is dim, he had a strawberry patch and when the strawberries were ripe your could go in a pick and pay him (I forget how many cents per crate) for the strawberries you picked.

Will somebody either verify this or tell me who I am thinking of? I know I helped cleaning up and setting out new plants in the spring - for which he paid me 25 cents per hour.
