Did Tampico ever have an Arts or Women's Club, and if yes, are there any records covering the period of 1900-1910? Also, who would I contact about the existence of a Whiteside County Fair during that time, and any records of artist exhibits?

My grandmother, Minerva Marie Lyon, painted several picitures which show some talent. I'm looking for any references to exhibits, clubs, organizations, in which she might have been involved where she might have shown her work.

The Peoria Historical Society is looking for information about any Illinois women artists who worked between 1840 to 1940. If you own a pice by such an artist they would like to hear from you at IllinoisWomenArtists@gmail.com and if you have photos, news clippings, diaries, stories, etc., they would like to know.

Sandi Hartnell you can e-mail me directly [hartnellsl(at)comcast(dot)net]

I did a search of my transcriptions from the Tampico Tornado and found references to the Glee Club, the Harmony Club, the Pioneer Tennis Club, the Billiard, pool and card club rooms over McKENZIE's store, the Whist Club, several gun clubs, the Tampico Businessmen's Club, the Athenae Club, the Chicago Auto Club, the Dramatic Club (vice pres was Jack REAGAN), the Friday Afternoon Club, the Sour Krout Club, the Prohibitionist Club, and, of course, baseball clubs; but......no art clubs.
Sorry,
Les

Thanks Les, I'm glad you let us know that you checked your TORNADO files. That is always such a help to me!

Sandi,
We had a Women's club, but I don't know how far back it went. I'll see if I can find anything. Have you checked with the Sterling Library with Marilyn Anderson. I think you know her already in the Genealogy Dept. (She's not talking to me anymore, or any of us that do FREE genealogy help - or I would check on it for you). If you don't get a response from an email to her dept., try going through the director of the Library, Jennifer Slaney.

I'll see what I can find on this end.

Sandi,

Try this website for contacts: Whiteside County Fair It offers a lot of history online, which
implies they may have a record of Minerva’s entries.

I have been in contact with Marilyn Anderson; it was an article in the Whiteside County Genealogical Society that prompted me to inquire further into my grandmother's artistic endeavors.

Thanks, Les, for looking. Sandi
