Hi Denise,

Thank you for the information.

It appears that my Clark and Asa were born in Vermont. I was hoping to learn how these two men might be related. Are there any other Whiteside sources that might indicate if they were cousins, or perhaps, uncle and nephew? They could also be not related at all.

Sincerely,
CJ Abbott

Good Morning, Denise!

Thank you for the incredible amount of information. Your data provides many leads and I hope to find the connection to my Clark Abbott.

I need to review my own database before I plot my next step. I have some references to Clark's father being Moses Abbott. In addition, Clark may have had a brother John and a sister Relief.

The genealogical hunt continues.

Again, thank you so much for your time and efforts.

The biography of A.M. Abbott states that Mrs. Abbott's sister Phebe Drake was the second person interred in burial ground in Union Grove. Can anyone confirm that the Phebe Sperry who married "Ferman" Drake in Hancock Co IL in 1842 is that Mrs. Drake? Phebe supposedly died in 1843. "Firman" Drake is my gggrandfather who married Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Finch in Whiteside Co in 1847. Betsy was the daughter of James Finch and Sarah Phillips. Among other facts, I am trying to verify Firman's parents.
Also, in the 1850 Census (Whiteside Co IL), Enoch Brown (7) and Joseph M. Brown (1) are living with Firman and Betsy. By the 1860 Census (Winona Co MN), Enoch has changed his name to Drake but Joseph is not in the household. Anyone know who the parents of these boys are? (This is pure curiosity.)
Thank you. Rosemary

CJ,
Clark Abbot and Betsey Crouch were also my ancestors. Have you found their parents? I would appreciate any info you can share, and of course I will share whatever I have. My ancestor is their daughter Miriam, who married Abner Ustick.
Thanks!

Having spent the majority of my spare time throughout my life (62) in Tampico I can say factually that there is a Noyes farm as well as a McFarland farm and people of those names in Tampico Vt.

Finding the New England connection to Clark Abbott and Betsey Crouch Abbott is still posing challenges. It seems Abbott is a very common name there. Supposedly Albert T Abbott was born in Chautauqua County New York July 20, 1842. The Abbott family then trekked to the midwest around 1842-1843. I can confirm their Illinois presence with Clark's Jan 3, 1849 marriage to Sarah H Moore in Kendall County IL. Also, the Clark Abbott family shows up in Little Rock, Kendall County 1850 Census.

I have updated my email address, Denise. Thanks for the gentle reminder.

Thanks

Chris Roberts,
It would be wonderful to verify the parents of Clark Abbott and first wife Betsey Crouch. I have seen one reference on the Genealogy Trails website that says Clark's father was Moses but I haven't verified that info. Do you know if the Whiteside County Abbott families were related? Perhaps Asa and Clark Abbott were cousins, for example. It seems that so many Abbott folks would only land in the same county so they could remain close to their kin.

Thanks

My great grand father Horace Abbott (1840=1903} son of Clark & Betsy Abbott they came to Fulton in 1842. As a child he was my hero. Growing up among his belongings was & still is majic to me. The oral history was rich in detail. The war years = being a law man in a wild river town = the calora expedemic. Can anyone sugest resourse for a closer look at the man. Thanks: Bob Abbott

Hello Bob,
I would suggest you try Barb Mask at the Fulton Historical Society. They archive the old Fulton newspapers and they may have some articles on him. Have you checked the Sterling Gazette newspapers?

Hi Bob,
We share Clark and Betsy Crouch Abbott. Horace was
the brother to Albert T. Clark, my g-g-grandfather.
That connection makes Horace my g-g-grand uncle.

I am trying to trace Clark, Albert and Horace back to New England where Abbott is a very common name. I don't know if they came from New York, Vermont, Massachusetts or somewhere else. Do you have any clues?

What a thrill to find your post here.

My email is cadd88@gmail.com if you care to correspond
now and then.

Thanks!
CJ

CJ: Thanks for your reply. Wish I had more to offer. Family lore is that Horace came west as a young boy from Vermont. Am sending a picture of a walnut cabinet that his father had made during a long winter in Vermont.

I allso have a photo of Horace and two others in front of his livery stable in Fulton. The building is still standing. My dad (D.W. Abbott operated the State Line tavern on the ground floor & for several years we lived in the apartment upstairs
You menton that you are looking for English roots. I can only add confusion. Family history as passed down to me is that the first Abbott of our line was from Ierland. It was during a potatoe famine. His Lord sent him to market with a wagon full of spuds to sell. He sold the potatoes the team and wagon & bought passage to the U.S. Ah the Irish.
My uncel L.S. Abbott was a Civil War history buff. He had lots of old family history but I have lost track of him & have had no luck traceing down his two children.

What a shame that once lost family history is so hard to recreat.

Hi Bob - I am also descended from Clark Abbott and Betsy Crouch, through their daughter Miriam Abbott who married Abner Ustick. I would love to see the photos you have. I have recently been in touch with a woman named Cynthia who is researching the Abbotts for her cousin. Her cousin Bertha married Leslie Leland Abbott, son of Lester S. Abbott. Is your father Douglas W. Abbott, and mother Thelma?

You can email me directly at croberts4@aol.com and I can put you in touch with Cynthia.

I believe I have a breakthrough regarding the parents of Clark Abbott through DNA. I've found over a dozen DNA matches who descend from Kneeland Abbott and Elizabeth Stanley (who married possibly in 1770 or so in Amherst, Massachusetts) through their children Abiel, Jacob and Kneeland, Jr.

Kneeland and Elizabeth may also have had a son named Moses born about 1774 who married Mary Clerk 12 October 1797 in Hillsboro, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The 1800 census shows them in Hillsboro with a female under 10, but I haven't yet located any other records.

Possibly Mary Clerk's surname is actually Clark which would make a lot of sense if they had a son named Clark Abbott. This is all still just a hypothesis but my DNA connection to this Abbott family is strong and our Clark must belong to them somehow. I'm wondering if anyone else who's descended from Clark (or other Abbotts in Whiteside County) has tracked their DNA matches to this family?
