William Franks Higday has the following children
Charlotte
Levi
George
Elizabeth (Lib) (Eliza)
Martha C
Indiana
William
He was married to a Libby and a Alice Fenton.

If L L is part of this family then she would be born
after George.
Tammy
I did find one year of taxes, but it stated L L Higday
again.

Could it be that Libby or Alice went by the name of Agnes? I'm pretty comfortable with reading (for what it's worth) the 1861 Canada census as his spouse recorded as Agnes. In the 1870 Laporte County Cass Twp., census, Williams spouse is well written and the name is Agnes. William is 62, and Agnes is 52, and b. Canada.

Same census, Indiana is age 7, b. Indiana.
William T. age 15, b. Canada.
Eliza, age 23, b. Canada.

Excerpt from Family Trails Across America written by Hamilton Higday:

Page Sixteen: William Franks (2d); b. Nov. (Mch.?) 22, 1808; d. at Wichita Kansas; was living in the "town of Tecumseh, Sinclair district, Upper Canada,: March 11, 1843 (Vol. 8, p. 42, Cortland County, N.Y., Records--Administration of his father's estate; m. 1st, Libby, ______; 2nd, agnes _____ (b. CanadaJ); lived in Northern Wisconsin; operated a farm near Wichita in 1885; ten children or more were born, "only on of these were married"; three by the first marriage:

1. Charlotte Sherwood

2. Levi, an engineer

3. George, a hnchback

4. Elizabeth ("Lib"), a milliner, or Eliza

5. William;r. Stevens County, Kansas, 1915-1916

6. Martha; m. ____ Reynolds

7. Indiana or "Ann"; d. Tacoma, Wash., 1912

Libby was indeed the first wife. But he had over 10 kids and only 7 are mentioned in the book.
Could L L stand for Libby? Another thought.
I never doubted your reading Jack, infact I really
appreciate all that you have put into this and what your thoughts are. This has been a hard one to figure out. But with the help of you and Denise it is getting closer to being solved.
Thank you so very much for all that you have researched.

Thanks Tammy,
I took a look at your Ancestry file on the Higdays.

I noticed you have an 1844 date on the marriage of Wm. F. to Alice Fenton of 1844, and a birth year date of 1844 for son George, who could be child number three. I'll assume that Charlotte was old enough to be out of the household per 1861 Ontario census. In that census, No. 35 is Levi, and if these children happen to be in order of age (and I believe they are) Levi is the oldest at home for the census. Next is George, and it could be that Libby was his mother, and perhaps died at child birth. IF correct on this assumption, William and Libby had three children. Charlotte, Levi, and George.

After George is Elizabeth, who I believe has the mother of Agness. (Agness - Agnes) She appears to be the Alice Fenton, and she may have been Agnes Alice, or, Alice Agnes Fenton, and used Agnes. If I remember, Elizabeth was born 1846. I'm going to take the 1880 Tampico census for L. L. Higday as being born 1846 in Indiana, as information from the Ladue family that was a misunderstanding. However, it could be L. L. was a twin to Elizabeth.
Per the list as written above our L. L. is listed between Elizabeth and Martha. It could also be that L. L. was a twin to Martha. I'm going to play L. L. as a separate birth, and say 1847 or 1848, and before Martha.
It will be interesting to see how or what Denise can pick out of the poor image in the 1861 census.

I also wondered if Levi L and LL were twins as they have the same initials. Boy/Girl twins run in the family.
I really appreciate your view points. It makes me think about how other people percieve this and it helps open up this mystery.
I wish it was mandatory for people to write this stuff down...LOL
But then it would take the fun out of figuring it out.

I got so excited over that 1861 census, I forgot to look at the right side, which gives the ages.
William 54; Agnes 42; Levi 23; George 21; Elizabeth 15; our L. L. 14 and it appears her name here starts with the letter "C". It is different than the "L." in Levi, and appears to be the same letter in Charles. I think our L. L. changed her name in Illinois.; Martha 12; William 7; and Charles H. ? 3.

MEN OF PROGRESS - INDIANA

p. 497
REYNOLDS, Dr. George Rensselaer, one of the mosst successful and prominent physicians of Plymouth, Ind., is a native of the Hoosier state. His ancestors on his father's side were of English and Welsh descent, and those on his mother's side were of Scotch-Irish extraction. his father, John Reynolds, was a farmer of moderate circumstances. he was born in Rome, N. Y., in
1796, and moved to Laporte county, Indiana, in 1835. He then moved to Plymouth in 186y7, where he died in 1874. His mother, Keturah Reynolds, (nee Vincent) was born in New York in 1804 and died near Kingsbury, Ind. in 1856.

Dr. Reynolds was born in Kingsbury, Ind. March 11th, 1841. He attended the public schools of Laporte county, Indiana, until the winter of 1858-59, when he attended the select school at Kingsbury.During the winter of 1860-61 he attended the public schools of Plymouth, Ind., and in 1862-63 he attended the "M. and F." college located at Valparaiso, Ind. Dr. Reynolds began the study of his profession in the office with Dr. Tompkins Higday at Laporte, Ind. in the spring of 1864.

During the fall and winter of the next year he attended lectures at the medical department of the university at Ann Arbor, Mich. During the summer of 1866 he was hospital steward of the northern Indiana prison at Michigan city, Ind. During the fall and winter of 1866-67 he attended the second course of lectures at Ann Arbor, Mich., and graduated from the medical department of the university March 27th, 1867.

Dr. Reynolds began the practice of medicine at Plymouth, Ind. in 1867, where he has continued in practice ever since. During his residence in that city, he was local surgeon for all the railroads entering Plymouth, for a number of years.

Politically, Dr. Reynolds is a member of the emocratic party.

In years past he has been an active worker in the political ranks, and his work was always productive of good results. He was president of the city school board for twelve consecutive years, and was the first secretary of the county board of health of Marshall county. He served as postmaster of Plymouth for four
years under President Cleveland's first administration. he is, at present, serving his second term as a member of the city council of Plymouth.

Dr. Reynolds was married November 16th, 1869 to Martha C. Higday, daughter of Wm.Higday, of LaPorte, Ind. Eight children were born to this union, five of whom still survive: Mrs. Bertha K. McDonald, Mrs. Maud M. Hougton, Carl V., George F. and Estelle C. Reynolds.

Dr. Reynolds has been wonderfully successful in the practice of his profession. He is a close student of all social, political and scientific questions, broad-minded and full of public spirit. He is a man of ver decided convictions on all public questions, and maintains his stand with a resolute firmness. He is regarded as one of the most influential citizens of his city, and his counsel is invariably sought on all questions of public interest. He is exceedingly liberal and progressive and is one of the foremost to undertake an enterprise intended for the public good. In his profession he is regards as a leader, and he
has not only a reputation in his own community, but also throughout the state. [includes sketch of Dr. Reynolds]

The 1900 Kansas census has daughter Indiana as born June 1863 in Indiana. It appears William left Canada West shortly after the 1861 census and settled in Laporte County Cass Township. (farmer & landowner) His family should be found in the Indiana 1865 State census. Ancestry does not have it, but a search did show a place on the internet that did, but wanted name etc. to sign up for a weeks free trial. I did not sign up.

The wife and I studied the hand writing in the 1861 census and we both believe that L. L.'s name in that census starts with a "C" C--ia. It could be Celia.

Can't say I can agree on the interpretation of #38. The first letter looks to be the same as the "E" in #37 entry. It looks like "Eliza" to me. The "i" is dotted slightly over the "z" the same as it is in the name Elizabeth in entry above it. There seems to be a dust spec or something of that nature over the "L" in Eliza. What you see as an "ia" ending, I see as the up-swing of the tail of letter "z" and then ending with the letter "a" as a separate stroke. I don't want to keep this picture in my Picasa album very long, but I will post it here for now, so all can make their own deductions.

In the time frame we have been searching in for the Higday families, I have not ran across any other family members who had records in Canada. In the review of the 1870 U.S. census records in Indiana, I have another reason to believe our L. L. changed her name.

In Laporte City, Laporte County, I find Elizabeth Higday, age 25, b. abt. 1845 in Canada. She is living with James H. Taggaart and Mattie J. Taggart.

In Laporte County, Cass Twp., we find William Higday and wife Agnes. I'm taking it as three children.
1. In. who would be Indiana age 7.
2. William T. age 15
3. Eliza age 23, born Canada.

So then..... the 1861 Canada census that is so hard to read, and my wife and I have suggested C--ia, It could be the Cee is an "E" second letter "L" and the ink dot for an i is to the above right, instead of above left, and ends in an "a". This means now we have our L. L. in two census records as Eliza. It appears our L. L. lived in Laporte County from the early 60's until after the 1870 census. I have gone through the pages of the entire Tampico Twp. 1870 census looking for her and she was not found. If she did apply for citizenship it could be found in Laporte Indiana or here in Whiteside, but I strongly suggest that the search should include the first name of Eliza, along with L. L.

Thanks for the picture Denise. Your picture is better than what my equipment would show, and I agree that it is spelled Eliza.

I did a site search the other day, and where the information was found about L. L. being one of the first teachers, now rests in my mind that the author was reflecting to the school that was moved into town after the railroad was put in. In the 1860 census, I found two teachers, and one was a Smith, (I have lost my notes) but neither name from the 1860 census appeared in that school history section. So, it appears that Eliza (L. L. ) Higday arrived in Tampico about the time of the railroad or shortly after.

Eliza Higday is buried in Whicita Kansas...So now you have me confused. She is buried at Highland Cemetery.
Her death is April 6, 1876. Eliza is not L L.
Eliza was in Laporte Indiana in 1870 she was 23
at the time. She died at age 29.
Tammy
She went by Eliza, Lib and Elizabeth.

Hey Guys I just found her on the 1861 Census for Canada.
Add Update 36 George Hegday Male 21 1840 United States Single
Add Update 37 Elizabeth Hegday Female 15 1846 Canada Single
Add Update 38 Eliza Hegday Female 14 1847 Canada Single
Add Update 39 Martha Hegday Female 12 1849 Canada Single
Add Update 40 William ? Hegday Male 7 1854 Canada Single

Elizabeth and Eliza are two differant people.
That makes it hard as Eliza went by Lib, Elizabeth too.

Tammy & Denise,
I hope the two of you will excuse me, as I hour or two ago, I thought Eliza became L.L. Per the 1861 Canada and the 1870 census, Elizabeth and Eliza (daughters of William Franks became and still are two different people.

Tammy, I went to your Ancestry Public Tree, (which is difficult to find, as the are many Higday trees) and I see the picture in the Highland cemetery of the grave stone for Eliza. It never dawned on me that it was the older sister Elizabeth that became our L. L. in Tampico. It appears Elizabeth is very correct. In all of this searching, I thought Elizabeth had married a Taggart, but it does not appear that way at this time. However, Elizabeth is found 1870 living in Indiana with Taggerts.

In my humble opinion in looking at your tree as I found it a few minutes ago, I believe Williams children of Charlotte,(dates unknown); Levi L. born abt 1838, and George, born abt 1840 are children of Williams first wife Libby.

His next child born with who I believe was second wife Agness, Elizabeth 1846; then Eliza abt 1847; then Martha C. abt. 1849; next William abt. 1854; then Charles H. abt. 1857.

William and Agnes may have had a daughter Indiana born 1852, but the one I have found in the census records was born in Indiana abt. 1863 per the 1870 census, and I find it was the month of June 1863 for her in the 1900 census Kansas, where she was living with cousin Mulford Higday.

I hope we are all on the same page now. Elizabeth becomes L.L. of Tampico.

I agree with that Jack and now I wonder why she changed her name from Elizabeth to L L. I bet she
didnt want people to know she was from Canada, and maybe she was in the United States illegally.
Or she changed her name to L L because of the confusion with her sister Eliza. Also since she put
Illinois as her birthplace, maybe she became a United
States Citizen there and that is where she changed her name.
Amazing...we are not getting somewhere....This is
awesome!

Just an FYI - the 1860 & 1870 Tampico census records are transcribed on this website. See Table of Contents, scroll down to CENSUS/VOTER'S REGISTRATION and click on Tampico 1860 or 1870. The only entries listed in either census as a female school teacher were:
1870 Mary Murry, age 19, b. OH, living w/Badgly family
1860 Mary Lathrop, age 18, b. Canada living w/ Curtis family
1860 Louisa Smith, age 23, b. NY, living w/Jacobs family

No milliners listed.

JACK -You are correct about which school she taught in. I have been writing to so many people about this, I cannot always remember what I have posted, where. She was the 2nd teacher after it was moved into town, where the Tampico Elementary school now sets. The RR came in abt. 1871, if memory serves. That history is also on the website.

TAMMY - You noted on your Feb. 3 post that you found her on a Tax Roll - I had posted that in this thread on Jan. 27, 2011. It's hard to keep track of all of this great info!

SUGGESTIONS
I suggest you touch base with Indiana Genealogy or Historical Society - they may have citizenship records. Indiana Genealogy

Contact the Highland Cemetery and see if they have obits on the HIGDAY's buried there. If not, ask if they can get them or check with ,RAOGK Sedgwick County, KS for that state/county. See Martin Richardson for obit look-ups.

I'm beginning to think there are too many cooks in the kitchen, so I am going to bow out and let you all continue. Jack's doing a fabulous job helping you. I had pages and pages of info that I collected through the night, but when I went to post it in the a.m., most of it had been listed. I'm just glad you have the information. (thumbs up) I will be at the Historical Society on Sunday for the Reagan BD party. We anticipate a lot of traffic, but if I get a lull, I will check on more information - pictures, etc. on her. I think I checked our funeral logs, but they don't start until 1896? Figures! I think our school ledgers start at 1900, but I will double check. I'll also look for the picture of the millinery shop.

Tammy, I had a hunch that a important piece of history might be found in the old Higday family, and of course I (we) would like to know if this is in your family.

I beleive it might be improper to copy and paste it in here, so I will leave the url address for you to view.

It's a letter written by George Washington to Benjamin Tallmadge, 27 June 1779.

www.clements.umich.edu/spies/letter-1779june27.html

The George Higday mentioned in this letter could very well be the Grandfather of Elizabeth (L. L.) Higday of Tampico.

Yes George Higday would of been her Grandfather, as he is my 5th Great Grandfather. History shows he was involved in the Culper Gang in the Revolutionary War.
Mark Higday a distant cousin sent me documents questioning the credibility of George Higday. I find it very fascinating. I also have copies of his Revolutionary Roll Scrolls. There is another mystery
concerning him thou, my family notes that have been passed thru the family have his wife as Elizabeth Smith. However some say it is Elizabeth Smith Parcells. I am yet to find that anywhere.
There is another mystery on him as well, a Mary Higday
has shown up and a John Higday. Both appear to be
George's brother and sister. So have been digging up what I can on them. You have been so kind in helping me with all of this and for that I am most greatful.

Tammy, just one last added piece of data.....

The Illinois Land Data Base, has a record of a Warrent Deed dated 1 Oct. 1852 for a George Higday. It for the Southwest Quarter of Section #33, Twp., 20North; Range 01West. 160 Acres.

I went to www.glorecords.blm.gov and ran a search on the government data base. It is a Military Warrent Deed for a George Higday who served in the State New York, 1812. Who he served with is all there in the original document. Maybe you already have it, if not and you need help finding it, please let me know.

Sorry Tammy, I see I didn't leave the County as above.

1. www.glorecords.blm.gov

2. Click on "Land Patents"

3. Fill in the location ---- Select "Illinois" --- County is "Logan".

4. Last name -- Higday --- first name "George"

Then click the "Search Patents"

The county of Logan had a terrible courthouse fire about 1857, and all records were destroyed.

I have a hunch that it was George Higday of Indiana that died abt. 1865 that got the land in Logan County. Many used the purchase program, and then sold and made their profit with out living on it.

Thank you, Tammy. There is a form on the site: http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.com/Membership_Donations.html if you want to use it. You don't have to, though. The address is: TAHS, P. O. Box 154, Tampico, IL 61283. We always appreciate donations, since we are an all-volunteer organization. Memberships and donations are our only means of support. Thank you very much. I hope you'll keep us posted on Miss Higday as your research continues. Many thanks to Jack for his diligence and expertise in researching.

I want to! You and Jack have been so kind in helping me find who L L Higday was. I now know who she is
and who she was related to. The only question I still have on her was did she ever become a american citizen. I never heard back from them. But I have enjoyed the pictures and all of the information.
Again thank you so very much!

Tammy,
I did hear back from the Circuit Clerk, who would have the immigration records. See my post on Feb. 9 - they could not find anything. Sorry.

Tammy,
All of the events in Tampico this past week have been amazing. I have added a YouTube of the unveiling of the REagan Forever Stamp, held at the Birthplace on Feb. 10, 2011. It was one of only four sites designated for the official unveiling. See our Msg Boad: Unveiling of Reagan Forever Stamp

Also see our Picasa web albums for photos of the events on Feb. 6 (actual Centennial Birthday) and Feb. 10.

Centennial Dinners were held on Feb. 4, 2011, one in Deer Grove, IL and the other in Tampico, IL. Centennial Birthday Celebration & issue of Rainbow stamp & cachet were held on Feb. 6, 2011, in Tampico, IL. The unveiling of the new Reagan Forever stamp was held on Feb. 10, 2011, in Tampico, IL.

There is another YouTube that I pasted into a msg thread of the Reagan Centennial Gala at Deer Valley Gold Club & the dinner at the Middle School, catered by Butch & Rita McNinch of Dutch Diner in Tampico. See Msg Thread: Reagan Gala on YouTube
