TAHS Newsletter & Website Update July, 2013

Jul 9, 2013

ANNUAL TAHS POTLUCK PICNIC! This is my favorite meeting of the year. It's always a time that we get to see many members that we don't often see throughout the year. Everyone is welcome (you don't need to be a member to attend) and please bring a friend! Bring-a-dish to pass and your own table-setting. Beverages will be available. Guest speaker is Pat Gorman, Lee County Genealogical & Historical Societies. One of Pat's passions is making sure all soldiers' grave sites have a military marker. He will share some of his experiences with us. Some are comical, some not so much.
When: August 27, 2013
When: 6p.m.
Where: Tampico Community Bldg.
Contact: Joan Johnson, 815-622-8705 or garyjoan@thewisp.net
We will have a contribution basket for our friends at the PROPHETSTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY. As many know, eight buildings were lost in a fire, including the Prophetstown Historical Society.

MYSTERY PHOTOS
Cindy Leister has submitted a photo that she believe may belong to the WINTER or CONROY families of Tampico. If you can identify them, please contact the TAHS. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LD5c8jaNEptbn2k9R2zzxNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

MYSTERY PHOTO #2: WHIPPLE? WINSLOW? I recently came across an old photo of Michael S. Whipple in front of a Repair Shop (possibly in Normandy ILL) and also a photo of Bernerd Whipple (born in Greenville Twrp, Bureau county), and one of Wyanet's main street, and along with these post cards was an elderly couple who are very likely Whipples, or maybe Winslows. It had no identification. I have attached it and am so hoping you could you post it as a mystery photo for people of the area to identify? Submitted by L. PLANNING AHEAD
FYI: April 21, 2015 - Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's Assassination and Funeral with an historic recreation of his final trip from Washington D.C. to Springfield, IL. http://www.the2015lincolnfuneraltrain.com/funeral-train/

IN OUR THOUGHTS - Long-time TAHS contributor, Les Niemi is very ill. Please keep him & his family in your thoughts & prayers during this difficult time. Les has been a big contributor to our website through the years. One of his projects was transcribing the Tampico Tornado newspapers for almost 20 years and submitting them to our site. Les ran a "This Week in Tampico" series on our message boards for an entire year! This week I received a call from his wife asking if we could use a microfilm reader? Les owns one and requested it be donated to the TAHS if we needed it. It is quite large & heavy and his wife has no way to get it to us from Davenport. We are asking for any volunteers to help us pick it up and transport it to the TAHS. Contact Joan Johnson, 915-622-8705 or garyjoan@thewisp.net

Many thanks to Cindy Leister of Ohio (the state!) for purchasing 100 mylar newspaper sleeves for us! These are so needed for our loose Tampico Tornado Newspapers. The newspaper was published weekly from 1876-1966 and a special edition in 1981 was published by Neil Reagan (yep! Mr.President's brother). Our goal is to be able to protect each individual page in a sleeve. This protects them and allows us to view them with far less damage to the pages. Each newspaper was 12 pages x 52 weeks/yr. x 90 yrs. (1981 is bound and doesn't need the mylar sheets).

TAHS Family History Library & Research Center
Did you know that the Tampico Area Historical Society has a research library? If you have "roots" in Tampico or vicinity, please consider visiting our Research center, located in the upstairs of the Historical Building, 119 Main St. We have newspapers, plat maps, funeral logs, Cemetery lists, Family files, Whiteside County history books, etc. to aid you in your research. We have a computer or bring your laptop and tap into our WiFi! Members receive a discount on photo copies and access to Ancestry.com on OUR computer. Free assistance in your genealogical quest if needed. Contact Denise McLoughlin, Family History Coordinator, 815-590-2143.
