TAMPICO TORNADO,  May 30, 1957

LARGE CROWD AT THS COMMENCEMENT

A large crowd attended the commencement exercises at the Tampico High School Friday evening. Baskets of flowers decorated the front of the stage. The class motto, "Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead." in the class colors, Blue and White was suspended overhead.

During the playing of the processional by Susan RENKES, the graduates in caps and gowns, the young ladies in white and the young men in blue, escorted by Betty PETERSON and Robert LEUZINGER, took their places on the platform. members of the faculty were seated in the front row. All were a blue carnation, the class flower.

Rev. Stockton SWANEY of the Methodist church, gave the invocation.

The saletatory address by Neil RICHMOND; the valedictory address, resident, by Barbara DENISON; and the valedictory address, transfer, by Laurel THOMAS, were well given.

Athlene BISHOP and Kay Pritchard, accompanied by Susan RENKES, sang a duet.

E. S. METCALF, county superintendent of schools of Rock Island county, gave the address, speaking on the topic, "Be God for Something Good." Included in the thoughts brought out in his talk was that our education goes on through life. That now they had finished high school they would run up against a new teacher, experience.

He gave the graduates the following formula for success, happiness and contentment:. have a plan of action. be willing to work to carry out the plan: gain knowledge and behave yourself.

Fred A. EKSTRAND, principal, presented medals to the top ranking students, Neil RICHMOND, Barbara DENISON and Laurel THOMAS. Followng a short talk in which he congratulated the class and expressed the regret of the faculty in losing them, he presented the class to Dr. OGDEN who presented diplomas to the following:


Clare BURKE, Jerry BUMPHREY, Mary Lou COLE, Barbara DENISON, Geraldine DRIESSENS, Larry HUBBARD, Linda HURD, Doris JOHNSON, Gary JOHNSON, Frances McKAY, James PRICE, Neil RICHMOND, Carole ROSE, Jerold ROTH, Sandra SCHMITT, Ronald SHARP, Nadine SPEARS, Leland STICKLE, James TAETS, Laurel THOMAS, Larry THOME, and Ethel WRIGHT.

Dr. OGDEN, in behalf of the board, thanked Mr. EKSTRAND and his staff and the custodian for their services during the year and extended congratulations to the class.

The program closed with the benediction by Rev. SWANEY, after which the graduates received the congratulations of their families and friends. *******end of article***********

CLASS HISTORY

  In the fall of 1953 we entered Tampico High School with an enrollment of 28. During the
year we lost Charles Bohms and gained Mary Lou Cole from Hilisdale. We were duly initia-
ted by the Sophomore class, for whom we gave a party  in return.  Our Homecoming     float
theme was "Hillsdale is a Push-Over", and our Homecoming attendant was Nadine Spears.

  We came back as Sophomores with `29 in our class. During the year we gained Ervin Goodell, but lost Ruth Brockway. We initiated the incoming Freshmen with   a party and were given a party in return. Our Homecoming float theme was "We Thought the Parade was Tomorrow". Sharon Tusner was elected attendant to the Homecoming Queen and was also nomlnated candidate for the Snowbali Queen. In the spring we presented a one act comedy entitled  "For the Love of Mike", which was very successul.

  In 1955 we came back as upper classmen. Our class was reduced to 24 by the loss of Karen Hansen, Sharon Turner, Sharon Gloden, Laurel Thomas, Ervin Goodell, and Jackie Lampley, this year we gained Ronnie Sharp. During the year we were deeply saddened by the death of our classmate, Jack Nuelle. Our Homecoming float theme was  "We Train   Our  Trojans to Win". Nell Richmond was elected attendant to the Homecoming Queen. We successfully presented `Go West, Young Man"-a capacity crowd in attendance. In the spring we honored the Seniors with the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom with the theme, "Moonlight and Roses".

  We happily entered our final year with an enrollment of 24, having lost Paul Roark and
gaining Frances McKay and Laurel Thomas. During the year we lost Marie Farganus which
brought our total number down to    23. Our Homecoming Queen, Nadine Spears, and King,
Ciare Burke, were crowned at the Homecoming Dance. Our Homecoming float, "Sailing to Victory", tied for 2nd place. The Christmas Dance, "City of Angels", which  we sponsored, was presided over by our king and queen, Leland Stickle and Barbara Denison. Our play, an unusual presentation of "Me and My Shadow", was given in January before a large audience.
 We were honored by the Juniors on May 11 with the Junior-Senior Banquet         and Prom.
We spent the weekend of April 26th-28th in Chicago on our much anticipated class trip.
Baccalaurate was held on May 19; Graduation on May 24th.

I, Laurel Thomas, will my slow temper and  steady ??? nerves to Bonnie Kuepker.

I, Neil Richmond, will my access to the answer sheets to my brother; he needs them.

I, Gary Johnson, will my ability to stay out of trouble to Gary Miller

I, Mary Lou Cole, will my spelling ability to Dayton Ogden.

I, Larry Thome, will my ability to stay out of classes to any office boy who  can get away
  with it.

I, Jerry Roth, will my broken Elvis: Presley records to Coach.

1, Jim Taets, will my noon hour and after  school taxi cab service to Darrell Driessens.

I, Linda Hurd, will my library fines to anyone who can pay them.

I, Jim Price, will my ability to play football to Larry Van Landuit.

I, Larry Hubbard, will my rusty old ear to anyone with a S.0. S. pad or a muffler.

I, Sandra Schmitt, will my next 10 years dentist appointment to Betty Peterson.
I, Doris Johnson, will my ability to remember to bring my lunch to Karen Vandersnick.

I, Nadine Spears, will my ability to go with skinny boys to JoAnn Eshelman.

I, Carole Rose, will any boy friends to Caroline Bollivar because I won't need them any more.

I, Ethel Wright, will my ability to pay attention in class to Richard Taets.

I, Jerry Bumphrey, will my Einstein attitude towards Chemistry to Larry Bruder.

1, Frances McKay, will my alluring walk to Margaret DeMay.

I, Ronald Sharp, will my height to Larry Anderson.

I, Barbara Denison, will my bow-legs to Larry Sandrock.

I, Clare Burke, will my Ford to someone with an oil well.

PROPHECY

Sandra Schmitt is now working in a Lost & Found department in a cheese factory on the
  moon- She is also president of a hot-rod club.

Laurel Thomas is a Professor of Nuclear Physics at Thomas College for Three-Year Old Genius's. She is still engaged and the wedding date has been moved up to 40 years from now.
Barbara Denison is working in Mr. Ekstrand's Dairy Queen as an office girl, with a salary of
  $999.99 per week. Care Burke is her assistant. In his spare time he flies Super Duper Jets  for the FBI (Funny Boys Institution).

Jerry Humphrey has just written his 50th best seller for Senior Scholastic.

Mary Lou Cole is now playing baritone in the Marine Band. Just last week she was promoted from row 15 to row 13. She is working on her solo for the Inauguration of the President of the United States.

Jerry Roth models space outfits for men over six feet tall.

Gary Johnson is a second Rudolph Vadentino. His latest film is `Love Me Tenderly".

Geraldine Driessens owns the only weight reducing school in which you can lose up to fifty
  pounds in one day. In her spare time she coaches the Globe Trotters.
Larry Hubbard owns the largest farm in the United States-a total of one billion acres in
  all. He has mechanical robots for farm hands.

Jim Price is Elvis. Presley's personal barber.

Nadine Spears still lives at home with her parents. She is the head clerk at the Krogers store in Deer Grove. She is due for a promotion any day now.

Ethel Wright is an elevator girl in the Empire State Building.

Jim Taets is in Reno where he is getting a divorce from his 16th wife. He owns three Lincolns and five Cadilacs, each with built-in recreation rooms.

Doris Johnson is a movie producer whose latest movie is "Around the World in 80 Nights".

Linda Hurd now operates a "We Worry For You" agency. If you are worried about any-
  thing, take your troubles to her and when you leave you will be completely cured.

Nell Richmond is a cartoonist for Newsweek magazine.

Ronald Sharp is the star center on the New York Nickerboekers Basketball Team.  He is
  also the moderator on "Meet the Press".

Larry Thome has just discovered the solution to the salt situation in Ethiopia.
Frances McKay is Elvis Presley's newest partner. Their latest hit is "Rock Around the Sun-
  dial".

Carole Rose has one of the world's largest beauty salons. She has just designed her latest hair cut for French Poodles.

Leland Stickle owns a chicken farm. He is also a train conductor on the H.Y.&T.
