Robert Smith

PROPHETSTOWN - Robert A. Smith, 81, of 10 Grove St., Apt. 7, Prophetstown, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Morrison Community Hospital. He and his wife farmed in the rural Prophetstown area.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Castleton, the son of Fred E. and Orie (Weber) Smith. He served in the Army during the Korean War as a tank driver. He married Mary L. Whipple on March 24, 1951, in East Moline. He was a member of Leon United Methodist Church, Prophetstown.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandra Smith of Moline, Susan (Chuck) Odquist of Bronston, Ky., and Bonnie (Steve) Smith of Tampico; a son, George Smith of Sanford, Conn.; five sisters, Mary Johnson of Sterling, Wilma (Robert) Wolfley and Elma (Donald) Wiltfang, both of Polo, Betty (Jim) Allen of Marceilles, and Dolores (Marvin) Hougas of Ladd; five brothers, Maurice (Darlene) Smith and Fred (Jackie) Smith, both of Savanna, Van (Connie) Smith of Freeport, Arnold (Wendy) Smith of Kewanee, and Richard (Nancy) Smith of Perry, Iowa; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Rodgers; and a brother, Lawrence Smith.

The funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Leon United Methodist Church, Prophetstown, with the Rev. Andy Ploenzke, pastor of First Congregational Church, Prophetstown, officiating. Burial is at Leon Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m., with a 9 p.m. Masonic service, Friday at Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

A memorial has been established.
