WHITE -  At his residence, three and one half miles southwest of Tampico, Ill., June 30th, 1879

John WHITE, aged 67 years and 10 months.

Father WHITE was a native of the state of New York, where he lived until he was about forty years of age when he removed with his family to Illinois and settled near Sandwich.  Three years later his wife died leaving him in charge of five children until his marriage with his now widowed companion.  Fifteen years since he came to this county, and settled in Hannaman township, where he remained for four years; then removed to Missouri and spent one winter; when he returned to this county and located at the place of his late residence.

Father WHITE's greatest strength was probably his firmness.  He was not hasty in deciding, hence his conclusions were usually correct, and a position once taken was firmly maintained.  In policy he was conservative, both in church and personal interests, deeming it better to move slowly and surely, even at the sacrifice of display or convenience, than to incur loss.

For about thirty-five years he had been connected with the M. E. church, much of the time in the position of class leader.  His religion was not demonstrative, yet carried a deep conviction to his own soul of acceptance with God.

For several years he had been in feeble health and early in the spring seemed to be impressed that his end was near.  He suffered a gradual decline from the effects of consumption until the morning of June 30th, when he calm passed away, and we trust if forever at rest.

The funeral services were held the following day in the M.E. church.  He leaves a wife, one brother and six children to mourn his loss.

" May we die the death of Righteous."

The following is an obituary from an unknown newspaper, possibly the Tampico Tornado, from a scrap Book kept by Bessie (WHITE) MORROW, page 30,  Original in possession of Chuck Rodekohr.
