PROPHETSTOWN – Russell K. “Russ” McCowan, 60, of 6735 Perkins Road, Prophetstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at his home. He was a self-employed contractor in the Prophetstown area, retiring in 2000.

Mr. McCowan was born Oct. 14, 1949, in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Ralph E. and Lois V. (Allen) McCowan. He married Joan S. Stone on Feb. 14, 1971, in Prophetstown. He was a member of Leon United Methodist Church, Prophetstown.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Ryan K. McCowan of Prophetstown; two adopted sons, Fred McCowan and Tom McCowan; two sisters, Connie Grouchy of Freeport and Diane (Larry) Sikkema of Bozeman, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Leon United Methodist Church, Prophetstown, with the Revs. Meg Ziegler, pastor of Leon United Methodist Church, and Andy Ploenzke, pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Prophetstown, co-officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

Memorials have been established to Leon United Methodist Church, Prophetstown, and Unity Hospice, Rochelle.
