Donald Hamstra

August 19, 1920 - December 06, 2013

DONALD HAMSTRA, 93, of Resthave Nursing and Retirement Home, Morrison, IL, died Friday, December 6, 2013 at the home.

Don was born August 19, 1920, in Morrison, IL, to Dewey and Johanna (Bielema) Hamstra. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County Grade Schools. He married Clara Medema on February 20, 1943, in Fenton, IL. She died on November 4, 1977. Don was first engaged in farming in the rural Erie, IL area. He later worked at the Morrison Community Hospital in Morrison, IL, as a purchasing agent. Don was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, and belonged to the church Men�s Brotherhood, served as an elder and a deacon, and also was a catechism teacher. He served on the Erie, IL School Board, the Fenton Elevator Board, the Whiteside County Board of Supervisors and also served as the Fenton Township Supervisor. Don enjoyed golfing, traveling and card games.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn (Robert) Vandermyde of Morrison, IL, Donna (Robert) Thompson-Borchardt of Leesburg, FL and Beth (Louis) Zavala of South Elgin, IL; eight grandchildren, Lain Vandermyde, Kimberly (Brent) Nistler, Kelly (Doug) Kuehl, Rebecca Thompson, Steven Thompson, Lori Thompson, Lisa Zavala and Matthew Zavala; one great-grandchild, Claire Nistler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara; two sisters, Alma Meinema and Dorothy Boonstra; two brothers, Marvin Hamstra and Ralph Hamstra.

Funeral Information

FUNERAL SERVICE WHEN AND WHERE: 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home

VISITATION: 4 to 6 P.M., Sunday, December 8, 2013, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home

INTERMENT: Grove Hill Cemetery - Morrison, IL
