William J. Stickel

WILLIAM J. “BILL” STICKEL, 49, of Bettendorf, IA, died Saturday March 14, 2015 in Prophetstown, IL.

Bill was born on August 16, 1965, in Morrison, IL, to James W. and Anita E. (Vogel) Stickel. He was educated in the Tampico Grade School and was a 1983 graduate of Tampico High School in Tampico, IL. He married Cherish S. Swanson on July 5, 1986 in Prophetstown. Bill joined the U.S. Navy in 1983 and went to the Great Lakes Naval Training Base in Great Lakes, IL for boot camp and then was stationed aboard the USS Orion in La Maddalena, Italy. He was then stationed from 1985 to 1989 aboard the USS Moosbrugger as a Hull Technician based out of Charleston, SC. Next he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay Cuba as a Water Borne Security Coxswain form 1989 to 1992. Bill then transferred to San Diego, CA and served aboard the USS Acadia. He was then transferred to Moline, IL and served as a recruiter from 1994 to 1997. After that he was stationed at the PMRF in Barking Sands, Kauai, HI from 1997 to 2001. He was then stationed at Great Lakes, IL where served as an instructor until his retirement in 2005. Bill was currently employed as a safety supervisor by MYR Corp – Marshalltown, IA. Bill received several Navy Achievement Awards, Letters of Commendation, Certificates of Appreciation and Letters of Recognition. He also received the Sailor of the Year Award, Gold Wreath Award and Silver Star Award. He enjoyed woodworking, canoeing, scuba diving and most of all, spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Cherish; one daughter, Caitlyn Stickel of Bettendorf, IA; one son, Austin Stickel of Bettendorf, IA; his mother, Anita Stickel of Tampico, IL; one sister, Terri Stickel of Annawan, IL; three brothers, Wesley (John Ruppert) Stickel of Cape Coral, FL, Timothy (Debbie) Stickel of Colorado Springs, CO and David (Jann Brackemyer) Stickel of Sterling, IL; nieces and nephews, Johanna Kremer of Galva, IL, Allan Kremer of Annawan, IL, Cole and Keaton Stickel of Bettendorf, IA, Taylor, Chase and Dalton Swanson of Prophetstown, IL, Bianca and Kayla Fefee of Bolingbrook, IL; great niece and nephew, Audra and Mason Smith of Galva, IL; brother-in-law, Shawn Swanson of Prophetstown, IL.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, James Stickel; one brother-in-law, Tab Swanson of Prophetstown, IL.

 

Funeral Information

 

CREMATION RITES HAVE BEEN ACCORDED

VISITATION: 2:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday – March 22, 2015 at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 10:00 AM Monday – March 23, 2015 at the Prophetstown United Methodist Church followed by Military Funeral Honors

OFFICIATING: Rev. Cheri Stewart – Pastor: Prophetstown United Methodist Church
