FORMER RESIDENT IS BURIED HERE MONDAY

Mrs. Helena Hathaway Victim of Heart Attack in Chicago Friday Morning

 

            The body of Mrs. Helena R. Hathaway, former Prophetstown resident who passed away at her home at 6359 Kenwod Ave., Chicago, early Friday morning, was brought here Monday afternoon for interment beside her husband; the late Frank Hathaway, services having been held Monday morning at the Thatcher Funeral Home in Chicago.  The body was accompanied here by Dwight Ellison, reader of the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, who conducted the service in Chicago, and by Mrs. Hathaway’s sons, Dean and Bob, and her brother, Edwin Reynolds.  Graveside services were held here.

            Mrs. Hathaway, who was 62 years of age at her death, had seemed in her usual health Thursday and her death from a heart attack in her sleep that night was completely unexpected.  She was pronounced dead at 1:30 Friday morning upon arrival of a physician.

            Born here Feb. 18, 1894, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Reynolds, Helena Belle Reynolds attended Prophetstown schools and after graduation from high school attended Knox College at Galesburg.  Upon completion of her course there she taught in the high school in Cedar Rapids, Ia., nine years and was married there in 1923 to Frank Hathaway of Canada, the couple moving here soon after and taking up the operation of the present Breed farm east of Prophetstown. Mr. Hathaway died in 1931 and Mrs. Hathaway then went to Chicago, which has been her home since.

            Mrs. Hathaway leaves her two sons, her father, Warren Reynolds of Chicago, her brother Edwin of Chicago, and a half-sister, Mrs. Harriet Korkes, also of Chicago.

Mrs. Helena  Hathaway Funeral Held Monday

Prophetstown:  Graveside services were conducted Monday afternoon for Mrs. Helena R. Hathaway, 62, former Prophetstown resident who passed away unexpectedly at her home 3659 Kenwood Ave., Chicago, early Friday morning.

Funeral services were held at the Thatcher Funeral Home in Chicago, Monday morning.  Dwight Ellison, reader of the Fifth Church of Christ Scientist, conducted the services.  The body was brought overland to be buried beside her husband, the late Frank Hathaway.  Mrs. Hathaway's sons, Dean and Bob, her brother, Edwin Reynolds, and Dwight Ellison, who conducted the services, accompanied the body here.

Helena Belle Reynolds was born Feb. 18, 1894, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Reynolds.  She taught in the high school at Cedar Rapids, Iowa for nine years and was married there in 1923 to Frank Hathaway of Canada.  Mr. and Mrs. Hathaway moved to the Prophetstown community soon after, operating the present Breed farm east of town.  Mr. Hathaway passed away in 1931 and Mrs. Hathaway went to Chicago to make her home.

Survivors are her two sons, Dean and Robert, her father, Warren Reynolds, one brother, Edwin, and a half-sister, Mrs. Harriet Korkes, all of Chicago. [transcribed by Melva L. Taylor]
