Daughter to Hiriam and Elizabeth Bunker Cummings
She was born around 1876. I am guessing she was born around Tampico, because her brothers Sherman and Emmitt were born on a farm southwest of Tampico. Sherman in 1865 and Emmitt in 1864. I found her on the 1880 Census, but nothing after that. Can anyone help me?

This is interesting - There will be a "Bunker" descendant doing a presentation (GREENWOOD) this Sunday at the Yorktown Cemetery. Just as an FYI - Yorktown is soutwest of Tampico.

I will see if I can find more info for you. Perhaps others may have something to add as well.

Oops, I forgot about this posting and missed seeing it again when I was at historical society doing research. Will check more tomorrow. CUMMINGS is becoming a popular name to look up!

Jean,
I went to the cemetery and took photos of the CUMMINGS family plots. Here is Sherman T.'s headstone:
Click on the photo to open the photo album, read caption and also leave a comment if you like. There are little arrows at top of page (of photo album). Scroll forward (right) to see the rest of the CUMMINGS family stones. I did not find one for Nettie! However, I forgot to look on the back of Sherman's. Sometimes they have names on both sides of stone and I forgot to check for that. Will go back tomorrow.

I did not check state archives because I could not find her on the 1890 census. Just the 1880, where she is 4 years old. Didn't I remember reading about an old cemetery and then it was moved to the new Tampico Cemetery? What was that year?

So sorry, I have been to the Historical Society to look up obits, but was either side-tracked with visitors or the computer wasn't working, or something! Will try to check out the obits this week. There was an original cemetery just south of town - I think it on the SE corner of Jersey & 172 (aka: Main St./Tampico Rd)Supposedly, the last burial there was 1876 - but the "new" Tampico Memorial Cemetery did not organize until 1882.

The old cemetery has very few visible graves left.
Old Tampico Cemetery
Apparently there was some kind of official "reading" done in the mid 90's for this cemetery. There is a handwritten note in our files. I will try to transcribe it to the best of my ability. If anyone can add to this information, PLEASE contact me!

On my visit to graveyard on May 23, 2005, I also found the following stone:
EDWARD - Died June 14, 187?, aged ?. I could not even get a good reading from a rubbing. The end of the year of death is broken off. ~ Denise

Janet Goodell of Prophetstown Historical Society has added the following information:

was looking through my cemetery books to get information for Maggie Winkler's requests and ran across a page and paragraph about the "old Tampico Cemetery. I know at one time I saw something on the message boards about the cemetery one 172 south of Tampico and what it was called. In this particular book it was stated that the original Tampico Cemetery was a mile or so south of the village. At least one stone is still visible from the road. Straight south of Tampico on 172 south, to Jersey Road. The cemetery is at the southeast corner of that intersection. It also lists a few names.

Old Tampico Cemetery
Located south of Tampico, on the southeast corner of Rt. 172 and Jersey Road.
May 7, 1980.
Northeast quarter--Elvira V. Jackson, died Feb. 22, 1880, aged 63 yr 6m 17d. White pyramid stone----ldren of----BUEDSON ?
Southeast quarter---small broken marker EMK
White obelisk about 2 ft. high with Edwin died Sept. 24,1874. Aged 4m 24d. Jane died Feb. 21, 1870.
Near south fence--Alfred Graham died July 11, 1874. Aged 49 years. William Tusaw died Aug. 22, 1872. Aged 25 years. Stone lying on ground.
Catherine wife of Daniel Woodard died Sept. 8, 18 (72?). Stone lying on ground.

As for the census records, did you actually go through each page of the census, or are you going by a transcribed list, such as Ancestry.com? There is no 1890 census - burned in 1921.

1900 Census - Tampico, IL
Line Entry 83
ED 160 Sheet No. 1
HOH: Hiram Cummings, b. Oct. 1835, 65, married 31, b. NY; parents b. NY, retired farmer
WIFE: Eliza J.; b. May 1838, IL, 62, married 31, mother of 2 children/2 living.
Son: Sherman, b. March 1867, IL, 33, no occupation
"Mother": Judy (not sure of first name) Bunker, b. Nov. 1812, NY, 57,

I noticed in the 1880 census, she is listed as being "adopted." She was born in IL, her father & mother were born in NY. Hiram was born in CT or NY (depending on which census you read) and Eliza was born in NY (according to the census data). Perhaps she was a niece of Eliza's?
