Hello! I love this site! I am doing family tree work and I just stumbled on to it. I wondered if anyone had any info or photos they could share on Ferdinand Barenthin, born Nov. 18, 1845 in Germany and his wife Antonia (Sperk) Barenthin, born April 9, 1851 in Austria.
They were married in 1875.
Ferd died Jan. 8, 1916 at Tampico.
Antonia died Dec. 12, 1935 in La Porte City, Iowa.
Burial was at family plot in Yorktown (Fairfield) Cemetery, Lot # 94.
My family tree states that they owned a farm south of Yorktown and then retired to Tampico.
Thanks for any info!!!!!

Paul,
I am having fun exploring the Barenthine name. I see she descends from historic land of Bohemia. Do you happen to know her ancestral village name? Also, do you know what port she entered when she came to America? Central/Eastern Europe research is my real passion, particularly those countries involved with the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

I found the following in The Tampico Tornado newspaper:

December 11, 1903
BARENTHINS MAKE HUSKING RECORD
Edward, William and Stephen BARENTHIN hold the record for corn picking in the vicinity of Yorktown. They are picking corn on F.H. COOLEY's farm and Edward pickec 125 bushels in one day and the other two boys 100 bushels apiece. They went into and left the field at the usual hours and the corn was not the best, consequently their record is a splendid one for the boys. They are the sons of F. BARENTHIN, who lives south of Yorktown.

March 1, 1907
Photographer George LAMON was at F. BARENTHIN's Wednesday and took a picture of the wedding party.

I dug out the 1916 Tornado microfilm and found these, which will probalby be of considerable interest (especially when the father's obit showed directly above the son's wedding announcement!!):

January 20, 1916
DEATH OF FERDINAND BARENTHIN
Ferdinand BARENTHIN an aged resident of Tampico and one of the early settlers of the country south of Yorktown died at his home here Tuesday morning about 2 o’clock after three weeks sickness with a complication of grip, pneumonia and heart trouble.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 12 o’clock at the late home and then the remains will be taken to the German Lutheran church at Yorktown where services will be in charge of Rev. Wm. KREBS, pastor of the church. Interment will be in the cemetery at Yorktown.
Ferdinand BARENTHIN was born in Sandau, Germany, Nove. 18, 1845 and emigrated to the Unites States in 1859 when a young man after serving honorably in the German army. He was married in 1874 to Miss Anna SPERK at Tampico after which they went to farm south of Yorktown which was their home until two years ago when advancing years compelled him to retire and move to Tampico to enjoy the fruits of his frugality, honesty and industry. He was a member of the German Lutheran church and while he resided on the farm took an active part in its business and religious life, and after receiving communion from the hands of his pastor remarked that he was ready and prepared to go. Coming to America among a strange people with an alien language and with little means he overcame all and his fine farm south of Yorktown shows that his consistent and persistent nature had its reward.
He leaves to morn his taking his widow and eight children as follows: William and Stephen of Rock Island, Albert of Tampico, Mrs. Albert SCHMIT of Lafayette, Ill., Anna, Mrs. Marcus LYONS and Mrs. Dan CARROLL of Tampico.

January 20, 1916

Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1916 at 10:30 a.m. was solemnized the marriage of Miss Myrtle Mae KING to William F. BARENTHIN at the Immanuel Lutheran parsonage of Rock Island, Ill. The Rev. Ph. WILLHELM officiating.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Silas KING of near Magnolia, Ill., and has been an employee of the Modern Woodman office of Rock Island for the past year. Her dress was a beautiful light blue crepe de chene and shadow lace.
Mr. BARENTHIN is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand BARENTHIN of Tampico, Ill., and for the past six years been a salesman for the Illinois Oil Co. The groom wore the conventional color.
The bride and groom were attended by Mr. and Mrs. S.J. BARENTHIN of Rock Island. After the ceremony a dainty dinner was served at the Rock Island House, after which the couple left fro a short wedding trip.
Mr. and Mrs. BAREENTHIN will make their future home at Mankato, Minn., where he will have charges of controlling interests of Illinois Oil Co., in that state.
They will be at home to their many friends after Feb. 1, 1916.

Thanks, Les!
Paul - I went out to the cemetery to take a photo of their graves. However, there are no headstones! I have contacted the Secretary of the Cemetery Org. to see if she has any documentation on them. Still waiting to hear something. I'm pretty sure I was in the correct area (according to the map of cem. layout). They are next to Fanny & Edward BERGE.

You mentioned they were married in 1875, however, they were actually married Nov. 26, 1876, certificate #4295.

Other marriages listed:
Albert D. Barenthin m. Anna D. Mangan, Feb. 12, 1903, certificate #11406. Their children:
Florence, b. Jan. 16, 1904 (#10576)
William, b. Jan. 20, 1906 (#12300)
Harold, b. Dec. 07, 1907 (#13622)

Ida Barenthin m. Marcus Lyon, indexed in the Sterling Gazette: Feb. 1, 1915;5 (actual date of marriage is Jan. 27, 1915. See Descendants of Baxter Lyon in the "Family History Section of this site)

You have Les to thank for the location as noted in Ferdinand's obit! Your ancestral village has been microfilmed by the LDS-FHL. If you go to your local LDS-FHL, you can order the following film #'s and trace the Barenthin ancestral lines back for quite some time. It's truly an experience to do this and I hope you'll pursue it!
LDS-FHL
Topic
Germany, Preußen, Sachsen, Sandau - Church records

Titles
Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1794-1874 / Evangelische Kirche Sandau (Kr. Jerichow II)

Taufen, Heiraten, Tote 1794-1874 (Wulkau) FHL INTL Film

It will probably take about two weeks to get the microfilms in to your local FHL, so we have some time. I have some more obits and marriages that I will post as well.

Kirchenbuchduplikat = Church duplicate book
Heiraten = Marriage 1794-1874
Taufen = Christening
Tote = Death

i.e.: You will find the Birth/Marriage/Death records of the Barenthin family.

Follow the surname. Know the history of your ancestral area. Name spellings may have changed for a reason.

OBITUARY

Anna Barenthin Pump

Mrs. Anna Marie Pump, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Barenthin was born March 12, 1887 near Yorktown, Ill. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Yorktown and received her catechetical instructions from Dr. M. Reu at Rock Falls, Ill., where she also renewed her baptismal vow in the holy rite of confirmation.

In 1910 she graduated from a teacher's normal course at Wartburg college in Waverly, Iowa. She then taught in parochial schools at Carthage, Ill., Urbana, Ill., and Muscatine Ia. In 1915, when this congregation decided to engage a parochial school teacher to assist Pastor W. J. F. Adix, Miss Anna Barenthin was engaged, which position she ably filled until the Jubilee consolidated school was erected. She then taught the primary class in the consolidated school for two years. During her years of teaching in this community, she made her home with Pastor Adix and family.

In the fall of 1921 on the 24th day of November, she was united in holy wedlock with Otto Pump of La Porte City, Iowa, with Pastor Adix solemnizing the marriage. Two sons were born unto them.

Mrs. Pump was a lover of music and an accomplished musician which talent she devoted largely to her church. She served as organist and choir directress for many years and was active in Sunday school and the Lutheran Aid society.

Our departed sister did not enjoy the best of health during the past two years. In the month of January of this year her condition became quite serious. On June 20th, she submitted to a serious operation at the St. Francis hospital at Waterloo, Ia. She was well on her way to recovery when complications unexpectedly set in, necessitating a minor operation, but it pleased our Heavenly Father to summon her following the second operation. Saturday morning, July 2, 1938 at 11:45 o'clock. She attained the age of 51 years, 3 months, and 20 days. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

She leaves to mourn her husband, Otto Pump, and her two sons, Calvin; aged 14, and Richard, age 11. She is also survived by three sisters and two brothers. They are re Mrs. Catherine Gilkey of La Porte City, Iowa; Mrs. Dan Carroll of Rock Falls, Ill.; E. G. Barenthiin of Redwood Falls, Minn.; W. F. Barnethin of Galesville, Wis.; Mrs. M. Lyons of Kansas City, Mo.; an aunt, Mrs. J. M. Fritsch of Rock Island, Ill.; 31 nephews and nieces and a host of relatives and friends.

She was a beloved wife and mother, a good neighbor and a friend to all who will cherish her memory.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 4, 1938, at the Lutheran cemetery at Jubilee. Prayer service at the home was conducted at 1:30 p.m. by Pastor W. J. F. Adix of Guttenburg, Iowa. Church services were held at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor H. Daugs of Dubuque, Iowa, in charge at the altar and the local pastor, W. F. Domres, preached the sermon and officiated at the grave.

Pall bearers were Fred Lange, Albert Widdle, Jake Loeb, Amel Bauer, Bernard Koob, and Albert Koob.
