My brother and I are looking for information concerning our aunt Bernadine Heintzelman's first husband, Zora Phillips. We know that he had a sister named Goldie and we think he came from the Sterling, IL area. Any information we can obtain would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Sharol,

I was doing some searching for Zora and came across this obit (on Whiteside Trails www.genealogytrails.com/whiteside) - you will note that Elizabeth (nee Schultz) sister is listed as Mrs. Zora Phillips. Is this Bernadine's sister or step sister?:

ELIZABETH (SCHULTZ) VOGEL , 67, 903 2nd St., Sterling, died Monday at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Grennan Funeral Home with the Rev. Dalmus Meeks, officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Elizabeth Vogel was born on Dec. 11, 1915 in Sterling, the daughter of Ouran and Berdenia Riley Schultz. She was a member of the Rock Falls Eagles. Surviving are one son, Meldon, Rock Island; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Melody) Ford, Minier, four grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. Leslie Card, Coleta; Mrs. Sue Allen, Sterling; and Mrs. Ruth Ruby and Mrs. Zora Phillips, both of Rock Falls.

Hi Les.

Your information could be correct. I visited with Uncle Zorie and his wife Bernice in the early 1990s, and I believe their address was Rock Falls rather than Sterling. I didn't know much about his wife, except that she was a very nice lady and that the two of them were devoted to each other. She wrote to me about three weeks after my uncle passed away. I've talked to his son Emery, but Emery couldn't give me a date his dad died or where he's buried.

Thanks.

Hi Sharol,

If this Zora PHILLIPS is Bernice, then who are the parents of Elizabeth, Mrs Card, Sue Allen and Ruth Ruby? They must be step-sisters of Bernice, correct?

I haven't a clue, Les. Emery hasn't been able to give me any information so far.

My Aunt Berniece was married to Zora Phillips. I think that is the couple you are looking for. They did live in Sterling for a long time and then moved to Rock Falls, Il. I can give you the information I have on them if you want. Zora Howard Phillips was born 03/12/1909 and died 03/17/1991. I believe he is buried in Sterling. He had a son name Zane, I do not know where he is now as I only met him once or twice.

Hi Char,

Thank you for your information. Sorry I haven't checked this site sooner.

I was in the Tampico/Rock Falls area in Sept. with my brother and his wife. Right after we were there, I went through a scary health issue and ended up having surgery so I haven't gotten back on the genealogy band wagon again. Since then I've been a bit distracted, but I am doing well now.

When I was with my brother that weekend, we looked for the grave of Zorie and Bernie's daughter Darlene Adelle at Rock Falls. At the time, we found the place where we believe she is buried, but there was no stone. My brother had learned that Zorie's relative had donated a spot for the baby. Shortly before that, my sister-in-law had located an obituary for Zorie that listed survivors, but there was no information about a funeral or burial. I was able to locate one of Bernice's sons through the Internet since he was one of the survivors listed in the obiturary for my uncle. I was able to talk to him one evening, and he told me that he believed that Bernice and her twin sister may have sprinkled his ashes near their home where Zorie used to go fishing. If you can verify that, I would very much appreciate it. He told me that Bernice was still alive at that time, but she was living in a place with Alzheimer's patients and didn't know anything any more. I would like to hear more, if you have any other information.

Thank you so much.
Sharol

Char,

Zorie and Bernadine did have a son named Zane. He lives in the Coos Bay, OR area. I haven't seen him since he was still in school. They also had another son named Paul, and I believe he's near Bandon, OR somewhere. I do have some contact with Zorie's oldest son Emery. Emery tells me he was out here for his dad's funeral and spent several days with his dad's wife (your aunt) before returning back to Oregon. Emery lives in Coos Bay, but he doesn't have much contact with his brothers.
