Up and Running!
Up and Running!
Jan 13, 2024
Good morning!
Most of you in the Tampico Area woke with drifted driveways and the opportunity to stay inside and fend on your favorite comfort food! Here are some updates while you enjoy that casserole…
It has been awhile since a newsletter has been made on this site. FOUR YEARS! The passing of Denise changed the dynamics at the society and museum. She dedicated her time to genealogy and transcribing donations as well as archiving material. She was the main source at keeping up the calendar and newsletters. What Denise did for the society was full time work and those are shoes that may never be filled by one person. Hopefully we can get a few things up and running again but I wanted to start this newsletter to let everyone know what is going on at TAHS.
First of all, I know you’ve all seen some posts from me the last few months. Hi, I’m Jenee! I’m a volunteer member here at TAHS. The names of your board members and officers are listed on this site and are actively working towards a few “revamping goals” in the museum. The first project I joined them in was the demolition of Tampico’s oldest building that was located behind the society. The building is now gone but some scrap still remains. If anyone has any means of helping load the wood so we can move it to a burn pit- please send us a message!
2. The original email for TAHS has disappeared and some emails may be lost in cyber land. Our newer email is posted on the site but please reach us at tampicoareahistory@gmail.com. We (obviously) were able to get into the website and (with much learning) it is being updated. At the moment it will not be ran as well as Denise kept it going. We will keep you up to date on events but are spending our time on other projects until we get more help.
3. We held our first chili cook off in November n honor f Admiral Reeves and raised over $3,000. We are so thankful for the help we received and for our sponsors. We used that money and money from Joan Johnson’s fundraiser to hire Cole Construction to fix a foundation issue we had as well as pour a new concrete ramp for our farm building.
4. TAHS acquired the library building and are working on moving some of the displays to that room. Bonnie Anderson (owner of the Kickback Saloon) gifted us money towards painting and repairs and those should be done before spring.
5. The year 2025 will be Tampico’s 150 years as a village! We are starting the planning now by collaborating with other groups and businesses of Tampico and having our first meeting on Tuesday January 16th at 6:00 p.m. at the museum. Weather permitting. Please send us an email if you’re interested in representing an organization, school, church, etc. from the town and will be present.
6. Our meetings are still held the fourth Tuesday of every month. For our January meeting we will have Heather Johnson as a guest speaker on her family travels. It is also weather permitting but please join us on Facebook Live if you cannot make it in person! For our February meeting Dana Fellows will join us in presenting his family travels of past and future. It is great to see where the natives of Tampico have gone and to hear their stories when they return. We have an entire line-up of speakers for the year. See our website or Facebook for more details.
7. The Tampico United Methodist Men will have their Chili and Ham dinner on January 31st from 4-7 p.m. at the Methodist church. It is always so good!
8. President Ronald Reagan’s birthday party will b held at the historical society useful on February 6, 2024 from 10-4. Weather permitting.
We plan to continue staying busy for the rest of the year. Please join us in our activities. If you would like to volunteer you can contact us at tampicoareahistory@gmail.com.
Take care, Tampico. It takes a village!
