TAMPICO Newsletter & website updates for Aug. 08 TAMPICO Newsletter & website updates for Aug. 08 Sep 1, 2008

This has been a really fun month. Les Niemi has been posting “This Day in Tampico History” from his Tampico Tornado transcriptions. It has developed quite a following and makes for a great morning “read” with that first cup of java. It’s amazing how the more things change, the more they stay the same. You’ll find these vignettes in time in our MESSAGE BOARD section of the site. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Message_Board.html

I ran across an interesting article submitted in 1938 by one of our local gents that was working at Boys’ Town in NE during the filming of the oscar-winning movie with Spencer Tracy & Mickey Rooney. You’ll find it in our ARTICLES & LOCAL HISTORY section of the site. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/articles/article/22587/107592.htm

What Tampico-ite was born in 1932, tipping the scales at 12 pounds? Whew! Jim has submitted his birth announcement in our ARTICLES & LOCAL HISTORY section. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/articles/article/22587/108492.htm

We have something new on the site – Two videos! A friend informed me of the “Honor Flight Chicago” program, which flies area WWII vets to Washington, D.C. for free. One of the participants from the past flight made a video of the trip. It is quite moving. The next scheduled trip is Sept. 17th. His video inspired me to experiment with one for our vets. I put together a 46 photo video of some of our vets. We have so many photos; it would take hours to watch just one video, so I am not sure how I will continue. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/board/board_topic/23882/371490.htm

The TAHS held our annual Pot Luck Picnic in the Community Building on August 26th . This is usually our largest turn-out. Many came to hear our scheduled speaker, Harold Wright tells us of the Eclipse Lawnmower Co.. However, Harold was not feeling well enough to speak, so we were very fortunate to get his brother, Gene, in his stead. Gene brought three of his civil war characters; civil war POW, John Janeway, aka: “John January”; Richard Kirkland, known as “Angel of Marey’s Heights and abolitionist, Harriet Tubman. Photos can be found in our Picasa Photo Album: http://picasaweb.google.com/TampicoHistoricalSociety/TAHSPrograms

Our next meeting is Sept. 23 and will be held in the Museum, 119 Main Street, Tampico, IL. The meeting starts at 7 p.m., with guest speaker, Barb Ballew, Director of the Prophetstown Main Street program.

Our new roof project has been completed! It is impossible to thank all of those who contributed towards this very necessary project. Organizations such the RNA, Tampico Community Building, TAHS Bake sale & Rummage sale, and the Village of Tampico as well as individual donations are what made it possible. Many thanks to Anita Stickel, G. Wright, W. Whalen, B. Sherman, Coers family, Etta Mae Tufte Memorial, Ruth Thompson, Sue Hilfiker, E. Rosene, Brown family, M. Glassburn, Gary & Joan Johnson, Duane Thompson, G. M. Johnson, P. Clark and the families of: Lendman, Wetzell, Widolff, Cassens, Deets, and Conners. YOU made it happen – THANK YOU!

We are open to suggestions for some quick fund raisers this fall to help replenish our funds to pay those nasty winter utility bills.

On September 20th, I will be meeting with the coordinator for the IL Newspaper Project (INP) to decide which Tampico Tornados they will be taking for micro-filming. This service is provided by a grant, so there is no expense to the TAHS. However, originally I was under the impression that we would receive a free copy of the micro-film but have been informed that we would need to purchase that from the vendor for $50. A future project for the TAHS is to purchase all of the micro-films for the Tampico newspapers. We have m/f readers, but we will also need a reader/printer.

New acquisitions: Mrs. Isabelle Hein (a member of the Cain family) donated a ledger of the auditor notes of Tampico Township starting in 1873.

Geri Cassens has spoken with Leona Reberts who has some of the old movies taken by Potty Cain. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. What a treasure that would be for our historical society.
