Reminder - Tampico Memorial Day Cemetery Walk 2010

The Tampico Area Historical Society, in conjunction with the Tampico American Legion, Post 574, will sponsor the annual Tampico Memorial Day Cemetery Walk. The Legion will display the Avenue of the Flags in each cemetery and present a memorial service honoring our veterans.

Start in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at 10:00 a.m.
Michael Egan (1848-1913)and family will be presented by Dr. Sharon Callaghan. Michael Egan came to Hahnaman in 1868 from Ballaghdareen, Ireland. He married Ellen Ford. Ellen and Michael had 12 children, 10 boys, 2 girls.Michael gave generously to St. Mary's church. There is a beautiful stained glass window behind the altar from him and two stations of the cross.

Charles Darby, Sr. (1864-1948)and family will be represented by Prof. Gene Wright. All of Mr. Darby's sons were veterans of the WWI. They were local merchants which included tailor, barber & postmaster.

Over to the Memorial Cemetery where Rhonda Renner Reece will represent her great great grandmother, Ellen (nee: Cronin) Welch. Ellen Welch, 1845-1916 was born in Ireland and moved to Tampico in 1872, being the first family to travel over the newly built railroad into Tampico.

John R. Renner, 1842-1925 was the son of Wm. Renner, founder of Deer Grove, IL, Civil War Veteran and prisoner at Andersonville Confederate Prison. He was a Commissioner & landowner in Hahnaman Township. Presentation will be by James Reese.

In the event of inclement weather, we will meet in the Community Bldg., W. Market St., Tampico, for the presentations.

As a fund raiser for the TAHS, we are offering an opportunity to "Adopt-A-Grave" Floral arrangements are offered at a special price which includes placement. It is especially nice for those graves that no longer have perpetual care. Call Joan Johnson to order. 815-438-7581
