TAHS Newsletter & Website Updates -May/June

ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERSHIPS
Businesses - We offer a free webpage to any business that joins the TAHS. You can submit updates at any time at no charge. If you have a website, we will link to that site, as well as give you a free web page on our site. If appropriate, it will be listed in our AREA ATTRACTIONS & ACCOMMODATION section in our TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE. It's a great advertising venue for only $50/year. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Membership_Donations.html

The TAHS is also looking for new, young blood with fresh ideas (and a little muscle would be greatly appreciated as well!).

PROJECTS
We would really like to have a "cleaning day" to clean out the Farm Museum so we can have it open to the public. Terry Gaskill will be painting the outside and Carol Camper will repaint the lettering for us. We need several folks to help clean/arrange the interior. You do not have to be a member to help us. Contact: Joan Johnson if you would be willing to help. 815-622-8705 or garyjoan@thewisp.net.

Reminder - Annual memberships are due May 1st. If you have not sent in your renewal, please do so asap. Membership forms are available online. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/Membership_Donations.html

June 28, 7:00p - Tampico Area Historical Society's regular meeting. Denise McLoughlin will be presenting a program on the businesses on Main Street since Tampico was incorporated in 1875. I will pick everyone's brain for details on location, name & type of business, time-frame, etc. I have plat maps of Main St. dating from 1886, 1893, 1900, 1910 & 1921. The maps tell us what "type" of business, but not the name. I have been researching the owners of the buildings at Morrison court house. It's pretty time-consuming, so I won't have them completed by meeting. I NEED some HELP - if anyone is interested in following a specific building at Morrison for me, I'd sure appreciate it. I've started with the old Pope bldg, now owned by Chris McNinch. We also archive the Tampico Tornado newspaper, so we can glean advertisements from there as well. I have to go to two different clerks offices at Morrison. The assessors office for ownership of property and then the Circuit Clerk for "businesses" registered at that address. Sigh....There will be HOMEWORK! I'll have photos available for you to identify. You don't have to be a member of the TAHS to help with this (but we'd sure LOVE to have you as a new member).

Announcement:
The Tampico Community Club will not meet on the usual first Monday in July. They will meet on Tuesday, July 12th, in back room of Good Times Bar & Grill. Pork Loin lunch available. call President Lorraine Gaskill 815-438-2789 for reservation before the meeting date.

HISTORY TID-BITS
RULES FOR TEACHERS 1872
Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys
Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session.
Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupil.
Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.
Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.
Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty.
The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves. [Source: Schools of Bureau County - Past & Present, Vera E. Jackson Fletcher & Glenn H. Fletcher

It has been a busy few months in Tampico. I hope to bring you more news in the next few weeks. We've had a lot of requests for genealogy help. It's my favorite part of being a part of the TAHS, but it does delay my administrative-type duties. I recommend you check in to the website and click on our "What's New" tab at top of each page. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.com/Whats_New.html
This will give you the latest updates to website for the month. I also post "announcements" on that page.

After a lull in activity on our message boards, they have once again become active. You are encouraged to check these messages out and if you can help answer any of the questions, please consider answering them. We need your help. Currently, my number one "helper" on the boards is a gentleman from Prophetstown! It would be nice to see some Tampico people on there.

If you have any questions, please email me at tampicohistoricalsociety@gmail.com
