TAHS Project: History of Main Street Buildings

Jul 27, 2011

Wow! Great turnout at Tuesday's meeting. Thanks for all that came and especially to those that participated. Kudos to Bob & Geri Cassens for being the only ones to turn in their "homework." What a treasure Bob is. So glad and appreciative to have him & Geri as a member of TAHS! Mary Lou worked diligently as well and even got other folks to participate by writing down their memories. Betty Glassburn Apple is getting us a photo of the house that use to be where Casey's is now. It will be the first & only photo we have of it. Helen Buckley brought a copy of a 1910 plat of the village, showing the types of business and the names of the businesses. She donated them to the TAHS. Ron Sharp spent this hot, hot weather out taking more photos of the Tampico Memorial Cemetery for us to post on website. He's the one that did most of the pics for the TMC through the years. Good to have him back on board. I'll continue to research the bldgs and businesses and try to compile the wonderful anecdotes & memories you have all shared into something more cohesive. THANK YOU.

It is so good to see such enthusiasm amongst our loyal members who attend the meetings regularly. You are the treasures of this organization and I am very proud to be a part of this.

Denise Mickelson has offered to pay for the copies of the ledgers showing the ownership of the Tampico Main Street buildings from present back to 1900. There are 34 pages for blocks 21 & 22. It will be so helpful to have the copies at the Historical Society and not have to make trips to Morrison all the time. Thank you, Denise!

There are only 13 building listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in Tampico. It would be wonderful if we could get a few volunteers to commit to 3, 4 or 5 addresses and follow them, compile & organize the information found in the deeds and the wonderful stories that people are relating to us. It will take me more than a year to do it on my own, so if anyone is interested, please contact me. I will have all of the information at the Historical Society.

I will also continue to post old pictures of the town for you to add your comments on our Facebook account & our Picasa Web Album. We are looking for the names of the owners, name of the business, approximate years of operation , exact address and any fun stories you would like to share. First hair cut? Favorite store, special ritual with family member, etc.A big thank you to those who have shared their memories on our Facebook page. It is especially interesting to me, since I'm the "new kid on the block." But I notice as one person reminisces, others follow. Thank you! All of you are the reason for the Tampico Area Historical Society and why we strive to archive, preserve & protect your history.

Reminder: The Polo Historical Society will be visiting Tampico on Aug. 2. Volunteers will be appreciated in the Birthplace and the Historical Society. Contact Joan Johnson for more details or to volunteer. (sorry, left my notes at the historical society, so can't remember the time)

Reminder of our next TAHS meeting. It will be Tuesday, August 23, 2011, 6 p.m.(an hour earlier than we usually meet) and held in the Community Bldg. on W. Market Street (a different location than we usually meet). It's a Potluck picnic, so bring a dish to pass and your own table setting. Guest will be Prof. Gene Wright portraying Tampico-born Rear Admiral Joseph Mason "Bull" Reeves. Any questions, please contact president Joan Johnson, 815-622-8705 or garyjoan@thewisp.net
