Visitors & Research
Rick Laleman from Bloomington, IL visited the TAHS Family History Library/Research Center seeking information on his McKenna family. He was quite pleased to find new information that he was not able to find any where else.

Recent visitors to Tampico were Chief Petty Officer Rick Maghanoy, selected as Sailor of the Year from the USS Ronald Reagan, his wife Tanya and daughter Abigail. Pictured in front of the Ronald Reagan Birthplace, the Reagan mural on the Pitney Building in downtown Tampico and at the site in Reagan Park where the statue of Ronald Reagan as a young boy will be placed. The Birthplace continues to welcome visitors from all over the world. Most recently in addition to the Reagan family visit, the USS Ronald Reagan Sailor of the year and his family, folks from South Africa, Alaska, Hungary, China and Korea were welcomed. Everyone who visits is extremely pleased to learn of the humble beginnings of one of our most revered Presidents and only President born in Illinois. http://www.tampicohistoricalsociety.citymax.com/R_Reagan_Birthplace_Museum.html

Our June & July programs were identifying the various businesses, their owners, types of business, length of business and special memories of the buildings along Main Street, particularly those on the National Registry of Historic Places. This is an on-going project that we will continue to address. Many of our members and even non-members have submitted their recollections of these historic buildings through the years. I encourage all of you to do the same. I have been going to Morrison court house, Recorder's Office to follow the owners of the buildings through the years. This will not necessarily tell me what the business was or who occupied the building. I also need to go to a different department - County Clerk's office, to track the businesses by name. There are only 13 buildings currently on Historic Main St. If I could get 3 or 4 volunteers to take 3 or 4 addresses, we could complete that portion of the research much more quickly. If you are interested in helping with this part of the project, please contact me - tampicohistoricalsociety@gmail.com or 815-590-2143. Here is a link to the buildings on Main St. as well as a layout of what is on the National Registry. You can post information under each photo if you would like to contribute to our project.
