HUGH  VERNON  MOTT

H. Vernon Mott Rites Will Be Held Tuesday

Funeral services for Hugh Vernon Mott, 74, who died Saturday morning in Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, will be held at

1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Wheelock Allen Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Rev. Brace Johnson, pastor of the First Christian Church of

Sterling, officiating.  Interment will be in Fairfield-Greenville Cemetery at New Bedford.

Hugh Vernon Mott was born Oct. 19, 1885 in Princeton, Ill., the son of the late Lewis and May Mott. He was united in marriage to

Rowena E. Hayes, July 12, 1906.

The Motts farmed in Thomas, Ill., for many years, moving to Sterling in the spring of 1928.  In 1934 they moved to Chicago where

Mr. Mott was employed for many years by the Joyce Detective Agency. After retirement, from the detective work, he took

employment in the County Building until his health made it necessary for him to retire.

He is survived by his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Ila Easter, Mrs. Vyrda Henne, Mrs. Yvette Schaad and Mrs. Jennalee Forton of

Chicago; and Mrs. Ruby Swanson of New Bedford; a son, William of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Nicholas of Sterling and Mrs.

Muriel Cullen of Clinton, Ia.;  two brothers, Cecil of Chicago and Fay, Sterling Township Town Clerk, Sterling; and seven

grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nettie Mae.

STERLING - Mrs. Hazel L. Nicholas, 504 W 4th St., got more fire from her kitchen stove than she wanted Wednesday morniing.

When she turned on her gas stove, a two-foot flame shot out. Mrs. Nicholas escaped with singed eyebrows. The stove top was

damaged.

Firemen extinguished the flame by turning the gas off at the meter. Their investigation revealed when Mrs. Nicholas turned on

the stove a valve broke and escaping gas ignited.

STERLING - Services for Mrs. Muriel M. Cullen, 73, 805 W. 4th St., who died Friday in the home of a sister, Mrs. Hazel Nicholas,

will be at 1:30p.m. Monday in the Allen Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Riverside Mausoleum.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Nicholas, Sterling and a brother, Cecil Mott, Oak Park.

WOMAN, SON HURT BY CAR IN STERLING
STERLING - Amother and her son were injured Thursday afternoon when hit by a car at Locust and E. 3rd Sts.

Admitted to Home hospital were Mrs. Clyde E. Andrews, 42, 1315 14th Ave., and her son, David, 12. Mrs. Andrews suffered a spine

injury and multiple contusions, while the boy suffered a possible fracture of the right leg, shock and multiple contusions. Both

were reported in satisfactory condition.

Both were hit by a car driven by Mrs. Hazel Nicholas, 68, 305 W. 4th St., who was going south on Locust, and turning left onto

3rd St. After hitting the pedestrians, the car travelled about a quarter of a block and slammed into a car driven by Betty Jane

Shoemaker, 30, 408 18th Ave. Minor damage resulted.

Born April 22, 1925, in Thomas, Ill., she died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Northwest Community Healthcare, in Arlington Heights.

Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.

She is survived by her husband, Robert J.; children, Judy K. (Douglas) Spink of North Plains, Ore., John R. (Virginia) Forton of

Dunlap, Ill and Kathleen L (Martin) Beach of Schaumburg; grandchildren, Casey, Matthew, Becky, Carrie, Doug, Stephanie, Eric,

Jenna, Kevin and Christopher and sisters, Ruby Swanson of New Bedord, Ill., Vyrda Henne of Bellevue, Wash., and Yvetta Schaad of

Couderay, Wisconsin.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
