Generation No. 2 2.

JOHN2 GLASSBURN (DAVID1) was born 1779 in Botetourt Co., VA, and died September 25, 1856 in Bidwell, OH. He married (1) MARY RICHARDSON October 22, 1802, daughter of JOHN RICHARDSON. She died October 1809. He married (2) MARGARET Aft. 1809. Notes for JOHN GLASSBURN: In 1791, Bath County was formed from parts of Augusta, Greenbrier, and Botetourt Counties. According to the research done by Mrs. Frank Hough of Richmond, VA, for Mrs. Mae Hyde of Chicago, who is a descendant in the direct line of this John and Mary (Richardson) Glassburn, the "RICHARDSONS, CARPENTERS and the GLASSBURNS were near neighbors and some of their land joined." So the probabilities are that where John lived had formerly been a part of Botetourt County. (excerpt from DAVID GLASSBURN - VIRGINIA PIONEER, by Oma Glasburn Robinson) In 1804, John & Mary moved from Bath Co., VA, to Gallia Co., OH. When they arrived here, their possessions consisted of one horse, a cow and a gun. (pgs. 59 & 60) - It is always stated that John and Mary (Richardson) Glassburn had three children and the order of them has always been given as Olive, John and David. The two sons, John and David, are fully documented in Sections One and Two of this Chapter III (DAVID GLASSBURN-VIRGINIA PIONEER, by Oma G. Robinson). This third child was a daughter by the name of Olive. The Rev. Daniels has the following concerning her in referring to John and Mary (Richardson) Glassburn immediately after their marriage in Virginia: "They established their hoome near the old homestead, and here their first child, a daughter whose name was Olive was evidently born, but no exact date of her birth or events of this daughter isyet available." Hence, he places her as their first child. Since the Rev. Daniels wrote the above quoted passaage, it has been established that John and Mary (Richardson) Glassburn were married Nov. 22, 1802, and that Joh Glassburn, their oldes child, was born in Virginia (by Census Records and by records in Gallia Co., OH) on Nov. 11, 1803. This would place his birth just eleven months and nineteen days after their marriage on Nov. 22, 1803. Hence, it would have been impossible for Olive to have been born before this first son, John. Notes for DAVID GLASSBURN: David, after leaving his father's home in Boetourt Co., VA, crossed the Divide and spent some time in Calf Pasture Creek, Greenbrier Co., VA (now West Virginia). It is said that wehen he and his party crossed the mountains, they had to cut trees and tie them to their wagons to hold the wagons back. He married MARY ELIZABETH VARIAN 1855 in Gallia Co., OH. Notes for THOMAS ALLEN GLASSBURN: He grew up near Porter P.O. which is about a mile east of what is now Bidwell, and where the post office in this vicinity is now located. Shortly after his marriage, he and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, moved to Illinois in a covered wagon, and located near Yorktown. They were accompanied by this long journey by his younger brother, John W., and maybe other relatives. (excerpt from book: DAVID GLASSBURN - VIRGINIA PIONEER, by O.G. Robinson, pg 41) Thomas Allen lived on this farm near Yorktown until about 1861 when he purchased a farm in Hahnaman Twp., where he lived until 1872, at which time he moved to TAMPICO, IL. He was injured while working on the railroad. A large chunk of frozen dirt fell on him, breaking his leg in two places and dislocating a hip. He recovered from this injury, but was always a cripple, having to walk with a cane, and was unable to do farm work. He sold his farm and moved to TAMPICO. Here was Assistant Postmaster for eight years, during the two administrations of Grover Cleveland. He lived here until his death. Children of THOMAS GLASSBURN and MARY VARIAN are: i. MARY LOUISE5 GLASSBURN, b. 1857, On farm near Yorktown, IL; m. NONE. Notes for MARY LOUISE GLASSBURN: She was born on a farm near Yorktwon, IL; taught two terms in a country school, and two in the Primary Department of the Tampico Schools. She gave up teaching and went into the dress making business, continuing in this until she was appointed Post Mistress in Tampico during President Cleveland's first administration. When Grover Cleveland was defeated in 1888, some of the patrons told her she would have to "go up Salt Creek," but she replied, "I am only going out on a vacation, and I will be back again in four years." When Cleveland was re-elected in 1892, she was re appointed Post Mistress. She built a new home in 1896 (in Tampico) where her parents lived with her until both died. After that, she made her home with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. William H. Harrison, until Mr. Harrison passed away in 1916. Then in 1918, she and her sister purchased and remodeled the brick home built by their Uncle John W, Glassburn, where they were living in 1929. She never married.
